Alonso, Gyorko Reinstated Off DL
A grand homecoming for two Padres favorites could be on the horizon as manager Bud Black has rumored that First Baseman Yonder Alonso may return Friday night before the team’s start against the San Francisco Giants at PETCO Park. In addition to Black’s speculation, General Manager Josh Byrnes announced that Second Baseman Jedd Gyorko could also potentially follow suit and be on hand for Friday night’s game as well. While the return of Alonso is all but decided, the team still needs to complete a flurry of roster moves in order to accommodate the return both infielders to the club. With the recent addition of pitcher Sean O’Sullivan to the team’s 40 man roster, spots on the team seem hard to come by. As of 3:15pm on Friday (less than 4 hours before tonight’s first pitch), the team had yet to make any official announcement in regards to Alonso or Gyorko’s return.
*** UPDATE: Gyorko and Alonso to appear in Friday Night’s Lineup against San Francisco, batting in the 5th & 6th spot, respectively. Marty Caswell reported that neither KYLE BLANKS nor MILES MIKOLAS appeared to be in the lineup for Friday night. The SDUT Announces that Mikolas will be sent to Triple-A Tucson, however no word on Blanks yet ***
Alonso has missed 34-consecutive games so far during his stint on the disabled list since June 6th after sustaining a broken hand. Alonso suffered the injury after being hit by a pitch during the Toronto Blue Jays visit back in the beginning of June. Alonso was hitting .284 in 54 games for the Padres this season, with 29 RBI and six homeruns. During his rehab stint with the Tucson Padres, alonso went 8-for-14 with 2 RBI in 4 games.
Gyorko was also batting .284 for the Padres this season, with 25 RBI and 8 homeruns in 60 games. Gyorko hit the 15-Day DL after feeling some muscles soreness in his groin after some base running against the Colorado Rockies recently. In his rehab stint with the Single-A Lake Elsinore Storm, Gyorko went 4-for-7 with an RBI in 2 games. Gyorko is serving in his first major league season for the Padres after making his debut on opening day.
First pitch for tonight’s game is slated for 7:10pm at PETCO Park where the Padres will play the second of a four game series against the San Francisco Giants.
