Down the Stretch They Come!
Four teams, two spots, two weeks remaining. If you enjoy a playoff race, then strap yourself in for a wild finish. I thought I would take the time to lay the playoff race out and channel my inner Nostradamus. At the end of Sunday August 20th the Braves (86-64) lead the wild card race, the Giants (84-66) lead the National League West, the Padres (83-66), and the Rockies (82-67) are both vying for a playoff spot, but are on the outside looking in.
After a fantastic August, the Braves have cooled down considerably. Only 9-9 in September while playing one team with a winning record (St. Louis), the Braves will have their hands full with the Phillies, which will account for six of the twelve remaining games.
The Giants have posted the best record since the All-Star break, compiling a 37-25 record. Despite a losing record in August, the Giants have been able to not only close the gap, but take over first place from the Padres.
The Padres seemed to hit a wall at the end of August at one point losing ten games in a row. August and September were stacked with games on the road and/or teams with winning records. The Padres have fought through the dog days and now sit with the most favorable schedule.
The Rockies have been playing at a completely higher level than everyone else in the National League, winning 13 of 18 games in August. It appears that the Rockies may have come back to earth after playing .500 baseball over the last week against the Padres and Dodgers
Here is a quick look at what else is left of the schedule for all the teams.
