Boxberger Optioned, De Los Santos DFA’d

Padres logoThe San Diego Padres made a handful of roster moves this morning in order to make room for Pitcher Burch Smith’s first big league start against the Tampa Bay Rays. In order to make room for Smith, RHP Brad Boxberger was optioned down to Triple-A Tucson according to Bob Scanlan via twitter.

Because Smith is coming from Double-A San Antonio, room had to be made on the team’s roster. As such, RHP Fautino De Los Santos has been designated for assignment. Information of De Los Santos being DFA’d came first from The Padres own Corey Brock, also via twitter. De Los Santos was claimed off waivers by the Padres in February this year from the Milwaukee Brewers.

With the designation for De Los Santos and optioning of Boxberger, the Padres maintained a proper 40 man roster. Boxberger appeared in two games this season for the San Diego Padres, giving up only 1 hit over 3.2 innings pitched and striking out 5. De Los Santos also had only a handful of appearances this season, and went 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in two relief appearances for Tucson this season.

First pitch for Burch Smith’s first career start is slated for 3:10pm Saturday in St. Petersburg.
