Jon Garland Signs with the Padres
Jon Garland a 10 year vertern Starting Pitcher has agreed to terms. Of the available names still left in the free agent pool Garland was one of the few that still had some notoriety. With Ben Sheets signing with Oakland earlier today it appears that we may see other dominoes fall as well. Garland is not a spectacular pitcher and the last time he had an ERA under four was in 2005, but what Garland will do is eat innings.
Garland grew up in Southern Californaia in Valencia, he was the 10th overall pick of the Chicago Cubs in the 1987 amature draft. Jon has played most of his major league career with the White Sox before being traded to the Angels in 2008. While with the White Sox Jon won a world series ring and a young Padres team will be able to take advantage of his experience and his reliability. The past eight seasons he has had double digit wins and thrown over 190 innings in each season. A welcome addition to a Padres staff that cycled through over 13 starting pitchers last season.

John Garland is also an insurance policy to some degree because of the question of Chris Young and to some degree even Kevin Correia, coming off a career year. Gallagher and the other youngsters can continue tutelage in AAA and Garland can bring some VET presence to spacious Petco were he should flourish.
Then the icing on the cake, only 4.7 Million, how is this NOT a good deal?
