CAPITAL PUNISHMENT: The Padres dropped the first of six games this season against Washington yesterday…will also host the Nationals to end the next homestand from 6/10-12 to wrap up the season series…have won 34 of their last 47 (.723) contests against the Washington/Montreal franchise, dating back to 8/22/03…the club has gone 26-11 (.703) with a 10-2 series record since the Nationals relocated to D.C. in 2005…the Padres have gone 13-6 on the road against Washington, including 5-5 at Nationals Park since the venue opened in 2008…five of those six losses have come in their last six games here.
NO REST FOR WEARY: The Padres began a stretch of 20-straight games in 20-straight days yesterday, their longest stretch without a day off this season…also had a scheduled stretch of 20-straight games in 20-straight days earlier this season from 4/8-27 but had a postponed game on 4/19 at CHI which was made up as a doubleheader the following day…will start a season-long 11-game homestand on Thursday…next scheduled off day is 6/16 before the club starts interleague play back up at MIN (6/17-19) and BOS (6/20-22).
TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT: A total of 30 of the Padres’ first 51 games (58.8 %) have been decided by two runs or less with SD posting a 13-17 record…played 15 one-run games (6-9) and 15 two-run games (7-8)…last season the Padres had 80 of their 162 games (49.4 %) decided by two runs or less…in addition, each of the Padres last four games have been decided in the last at-bat.
THREE-OR-LESS: With one run yesterday, the Padres have scored three-or-less runs in each of the last 10 games since 5/17 at ARI, the club’s longest such stretch in one season since scoring three-or-less in 11 straight games in July of 1976 (7/9-21/76)…had scored two-or-less in eight-straight games before their three runs on Wednesday against the Cardinals, which equaled the club’s longest such stretch in history (also, 4/8-16/69 & 6/17-23/69)…the last Major League team to score three runs-or-less in 10-straight games was the Seattle Mariners last season, who scored three-or-less in 11-straight from 8/27-9/6/10.
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Padres scored their lone run yesterday in the ninth and have now scored 81 of their 172 runs (47.1 %) on the season in the seventh inning of games or later…the 81 runs in the seventh inning or later rank fourth most in the National League…the Padres have 163 hits in the seventh or later (.260, 163-for-627), the third most hits in the seventh or later for any team in the Majors behind the Houston Astros (170 hits) and St. Louis Cardinals (167 hits).
J&B IS SMOOTH: Jason Bartlett snapped the second longest streak of his career (247 at-bats) without a homer yesterday, tying the game with a solo shot in the ninth inning…the homer was his first since 9/7/10 at BOS…has hit safely in 14 of his last 17 games, batting .319 (23-for-72) over that stretch since 5/8…has raised his average on the season from .217 to .258 in that span…had collected an RBI in nine-straight games from 5/8-5/17, tying the club’s record also held by Sixto Lezcano in 1982 (4/16-27) and Steve Finley in 1996 (6/22-7/1).
