CAPITAL PUNISHMENT: The Padres look to improve their series record against the Nationals to 11-2 today with the rubber match of the three-game series…are 1-1 in the first two of six games against Washington this season…will also host the Nationals to end the next homestand from 6/10-12 to wrap up the season series…have won 35 of their last 48 (.729) contests against the Washington/Montreal franchise, dating back to 8/22/03…the club has gone 27-11 (.711) with a 10-2 series record since the Nationals relocated to D.C. in 2005…the Padres have gone 14-6 on the road against Washington, including 6-5 at Nationals Park since the venue opened in 2008…five of those six losses have come in their last seven games here.
NO REST FOR WEARY: The Padres began a stretch of 20-straight games in 20-straight days Friday, their longest stretch without a day off this season…also had a scheduled stretch of 20-straight games in 20-straight days earlier this season from 4/8-27 but had a postponed game on 4/19 at CHI which was made up as a doubleheader the following day…will start a season-long 11-game homestand on Thursday…next scheduled off day is 6/16 before the club starts interleague play back up at MIN (6/17-19) and BOS (6/20-22).
HAPPY FLIGHT: The Padres have gone 6-2 this season in games in which they fly to their next opponent’s city immediately following the end of the game…are 10-7 overall in series finales this season.
HERE COMES THE SUN: San Diego has gone 13-7 this year in day games, the most wins in the NL in day games and tied with the Detroit Tigers for most in the Majors…the Padres pitching staff has posted a 2.87 ERA (58 ER/182.0 IP) in their 20 day games, while hitting .246 (167-for-678) with 94 runs scored (4.7 runs per game)…Dustin Moseley has a 0.45 ERA (1 ER/20.0 IP) in three starts during the day.
TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT: A total of 31 of the Padres’ first 52 games (59.6 %) have been decided by two runs or less with SD posting a 14-17 record…played 16 one-run games (7-9) and 15 two-run games (7-8)…last season the Padres had 80 of their 162 games (49.4 %) decided by two runs or less…in addition, four of the Padres last five games have been decided in the last at-bat.
