HOME IMPROVEMENT: San Diego began the longest homestand of the season last night, 11 games against Houston (0-1), Colorado (three games) and Washington (four games)…the Padres, who lost 7-4 to the Astros to begin the four-game series, went 4-2 on their road trip through Washington (2-1) and Atlanta (2-1)…San Diego finished May with a .500 record (14-14).
SUNDAY/FUNDAY/RUNDAY: Please note that Sunday’s game is scheduled to begin at 3:35 p.m. PT…the game was moved back to a later start to accommodate the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon.
I AM FROM HOUSTON TEXAS: San Diego and Houston are playing their second and final series of 2011…Padres have gone 2-3 thus far in the season series against the Astros…the two clubs split a four-game series at Minute Maid Park (4/14-17)…the Padres have won seven of the past 12 meetings with their former NL West rivals…SD has also won eight of the past 14 games at PETCO Park vs. Houston.
BRING IT ON HOME TO YOU: San Diego is 15-12 on the road this year compared to a 9-21 home record…rank tied for third in the NL with a .556 road winning percentage and last in the NL at home with a .300 clip (29th in MLB)…the Padres have won eight of their last 12 road games since 5/11…since 4/30, the Padres are 10-6 on the road…San Diego has won four of the past six road series (4-1-1)…has the third-best road batting average in the National League (fourth in MLB) at .261 (244-for-936)…have hit .199 (196-for-984) in 30 games overall at home this season to rank last in MLB.
MISCUES: The Padres committed a season-high tying three errors last night (2x, also: 5/15 at COL) and have now committed 46 errors total on the season which are the second most in the Majors behind the Astros’ 47 errors.
RISP: San Diego went 3-for-4 with runners in scoring position last night…has gone 15-for-39 (.385) with RISP in the last six games after going 4-for-50 (.080) over the previous 10…hit .137 (28-for-205) with RISP in 30 games at home this season while hitting a Major-League leading .318 (69-for-217) with RISP in 27 games on the road.
GOING STREAKING: Chase Headley extended his career-high hit streak last night to 12 games, the longest by a Padres this season and longest since Yorvit Torrealba had a 15-game hitting streak last season (7/4-8/2/10)…is batting .341 (15-for-44) during streak…is the fourth-longest active hit streak in the Majors…also hit safely in his last six games at home, batting .333 (7-for-21) at home over that span.
LUD-WICKED: Ryan Ludwick has hit safely in 16 of his last 20 games since 5/11, batting .367 (29-for-79) with four home runs and 21 RBI, the fifth highest batting average in the Majors since 5/11 and the second-most RBI…has raised his average from .181 (on 5/10) to his current mark of .252 in that span…finished the month of May with 23 RBI, the third most in the National League…his most RBI in a month since 28 RBI in July of 2009 for St. Louis…has 36 RBI on the season which rank tied with Lance Berkman (STL) for the eighth most in the NL this season…is also tied for the lead among all Major League outfielders with seven assists.
