IT’S BEEN SUCH A LONG TIME: The Padres are 1-2 at Fenway Park, 2-4 in San Diego vs. the Red Sox.… San Diego and Boston are playing their fourth series since interleague began, meeting for the first time since Boston won two of three in San Diego four years ago (6/22-07)…SD hasn’t been to Fenway Park since ‘04, dropping two of three (6/8-10)…the two clubs met for the first time in ‘02 when Boston also took two of three (6/18-20)…the Sox hold a 6-3 edge in the series, but have outscored San Diego by only four runs 29-25.

INTERLEAGUE: San Diego all-time is 97-133 in interleague play, 50-65 at home and and 47-68 on the road…all-time at PETCO Park, the Padres are 21-39…this year, the Padres are 0-6, having been swept by the Seattle Mariners at home 5/20-22 and losing three to the Twins at Target Field…the Padres visit Boston this week, host Kansas City 6/27/29 and travel to Seattle 7/1-3.

THE DESIGNATED HITTER: All-time since interleague play began in 1997, over 115 games in American League parks, Padres designated hitters have batted .222 (98-for-442) with 19 doubles, 17 home runs, 61 RBI, 58 runs, 64 walks and 102 strikeouts…Ryan Ludwick was 3-for-8 in two games this weekend as the DH at Minnesota, with a homer, four RBI and two runs…Brad Hawpe was 0-for-4 on Saturday as the DH.

HOFF DADDY: Padres third base coach Glenn Hoffman was the Red Sox’ second-round selection in the 1976 draft…he reached the Majors in 1980 and played parts of eight seasons in Boston…the former infielder played in 678 games for the Sox from 1980-87…the Orange, Calif., native is in his 36th year of professional baseball and in his sixth as San Diego’s third base coach.

HE STOLE ONE FREAKIN’ BAG, BIG DEAL: Dave Roberts is in his first season as the Padres’ first base coach…served as a special assistant to baseball operations last year for San Diego…a native of North County in San Diego and a graduate of Rancho Buena Vista High School and UCLA, “Doc” played parts of 10 seasons in the Majors, including 45 regular-season games for the Red Sox in 2004…he was a pinch runner in Games 4 and 5 of the ‘04 League Championship series (scored two runs and had one stolen base).

FRONT OFFICE TYPES: Vice President / General Manager Jed Hoyer and Vice/President Assistant General Manager Jason McLeod are both on the trip this week in Boston…Hoyer is in his second season overseeing Padres baseball operations…he served eight seasons in Boston, working as Senior Vice President/Assistant General Manager…McLeod, who worked six years for the Red Sox, is also in his second full season back with San Diego as Vice President/Assistant General Manager…prior to returning to San  Diego (where he worked from 1994-2003), McLeod was the Red Sox’ director of amateur scouting…he was a high school teammate of first base coach Dave Roberts at Rancho Buena Vista High School in San Diego.

RIZZ KID: Anthony Rizzo is 10 games (nine starts) into his Big League career…he was selected from Triple-A Tucson on 6/9 and made his debut at first base that night vs. WSH…Rizzo was acquired in the offseason along with RHP Casey Kelly, OF Reymond Fuentes and Eric Patterson (player to be named) in exchange for INF Adrian Gonzalez (12/6/10).

FENWAY MEMORIES: Padres manager Bud Black made his Major League debut for the Seattle Mariners in 1981 at Fenway Park…he pitched back-to-back days 9/5-6/81…in his debut on 9/5, “Buddy” threw a wild pitch and allowed a single to the only batter he faced that game, Rick Miller.

CONUNDRUM: San Diego is 12-18 the past month over 30 games since 5/19… the .400 winning percentage that ranks tied for 25nd in MLB over that span (tied for 13th NL)…during the stretch, the Padres’ pitching staff leads Major League Baseball with a 2.87 ERA (85 ER/266.1 IP)…however, San Diego’s .223 batting average (216-for-968) and 80 runs are both last in the Majors over that time period.
