Daily Farm Round-Up: 4-18-13

Every single game tonight was decided by 1 run: The Missions and Storm lost despite great performances from their starting pitchers while the T-Pads managed to win off the strength of Brandon Allen’s bat. Top prospect Burch Smith is the most recent top Padres pitching prospect to throw 5 one hit innings, but was the hard luck loser in the Missions loss against the RockHounds. Thad Weber continued to excel for the T-Pads.

Hitting Player of the Day: Brandon Allen

Pitching Prospect of the Day: Burch Smith/Thad Weber

Tucson Padres 3, Salt Lake Bees 2

Jaff Decker-RF: 1-3, BB, K, Run scored

Daniel Robertson-CF: 1-4

Jonathan Galvez-DH: 0-4, K

Gregorio Petit-SS: 0-3

Cody Decker-1B: 1-3, 2b, K, Run scored

Rene Rivera-C: 0-2, RBI

Brandon Allen-LF: 2-4, 2b, HR(2), 2RBI, Run scored

Thad Weber-SP: 6.0 IP, 5H, 0R, BB, 5K (W, 2-0)

Miles Mikolas-RP: 1.0 IP, H (S, 2)

Notes: Thad Weber, who received a short call-up to San Diego recently, continues to dominate for the T-Pads; with his start tonight, he advanced to 2-0 and lowered his ERA to 0.82. Jonathan Galvez has run into a bit of a cold streak; over his last couple of games he is 0-9 with 3 strikeouts. Brandon Allen has been consistently producing since joining the T-Pads; he has a 2 home runs and 7 RBI over his first 7 games.

San Antonio Missions 1, Midland RockHounds 2

Reymond Fuentes-RF: 1-4, K, SB(6)

Rico Noel-CF: 1-2, RBI, BB, K, 2 SB(9)

Tommy Medica-1B: 0-3, BB, 3K

Jake Blackwood-3B: 1-4, K

Jeudy Valdez-2B: 1-3, K

Eddy Rodrgiuez-C: 1-4, 2b, K

Burch Smith-SP: 5.0 IP, H, 2ER, 2BB, 7K, HR Allowed (L, 1-1)

Notes: Burch Smith turned in another fantastic start after allowing 1 hit in 5 innings of work. Unfortunately, that one hit was a home run that eventually led to his first loss of the season. Of course, wins and losses do little to determine the ability of a pitcher; Smith was a victim of lack of run support tonight. No Mission was able to tally multiple hits, and their most productive hitter, Tommy Medica, went 0-3 with 3 strikeouts.

Lake Elsinore Storm 2, Visalia Rawhide 3

Travis Jankowski-CF: 1-4, BB, Run scored, 2 SB(9)

Jace Peterson-SS: 0-3, 2BB, 2K, SB(4)

Cory Spangenberg-2B: 1-3, RBI, BB, 2K

Yeison Asencio-RF: 0-4, 2K

Kyle Gaedele-LF: 0-3, K

Robert Kral-C: 1-3, HR(3), RBI, BB, K, Run scored

James Needy-SP: 4.0 IP, 5H, ER, 4BB, 2K

Matt Lollis-RP: 1.2 IP, H, 4K (H, 2)

Notes: Travis Jankowski has been extremely consistent at the plate; he’s hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games and it hitting .333 on the year. With 2 stolen bases tonight, he has a total of 9 over a 14 game span. Matt Lollis continues to dominate coming out of the pen; he has now thrown 9.2 innings with 0 earned runs and 13 strikeouts. He has only allowed 5 hits and 2 walks over that span.

Three weeks after I was born, Padre legend Tony Gwynn visited my hospital and handed out teddy bears to all the newborn children, including me. I have been a Padre fan ever since. Whether SD is in the midst of an exciting playoff run, or an uneventful off-season, I love following them and I love writing about them.
