Daily Farm Round-Up: 4-4-14

Tonight was the mirror image of last night’s ball games. The Chihuahuas and Missions were both shutout while the Storm and the TinCaps both enjoyed fine offensive performances and victories. The Padres 2013 draft class did well tonight as 2013 first round pick Hunter Renfroe had 3 RBI’s and 2013 2nd round pick Dustin Peterson fell a home run shy of the cycle.

Hitting Prospect of the Day: Hunter Renfroe

Pitching Prospect of the Day: Zach Eflin

El Paso Chihuahuas 0, Reno Aces 2

Reymond Fuentes – CF: 1-3, BB

Kyle Blanks – LF: 1-2, 2BB, K

Jeff Francoeur – RF: 0-4, K

Cody Decker – 1B: 0-3, BB, K

Ryan Jackson – SS: 2-4, 0-4, K

Alberto Gonzalez – 2B: 2-2, 2B

Keyvius Sampson – SP: 4.1 IP, 4H, ER, 2BB, 3K (L, 0-1)

Notes: The Chihuahuas endured their first loss as a franchise. Alberto Gonzalez made the only significant offensive contribution; he had 2 of the Chihuahuas 5 hits and was the only Chihuahua with an extra-base hit tonight. The poor offensive performance soiled a very solid pitching effort by Keyvius Sampson. Sampson dominated Double-A last year, but struggled heavily in Triple-A so it’s nice to see him get off to a good start with the Chihuahuas.

San Antonio Missions 0, Springfield Cardinals 1

Travis Jankowski – CF: 1-4, K

Cory Spangenberg – 2B: 1-4, 2K

Jace Peterson – SS: 1-3, 2B, BB, K

Rymer Liriano – LF: 0-4, 3K

Yeison Asencio – RF: 0-4, K

Austin Hedges – C: 0-2, 2K

Josh Geer – SP: 4.0 IP, 3H, ER, BB, K (L, 0-1)

Notes: The Missions couldn’t muster up anything offensively as they were shut out and struck out 15 times. However, Austin Hedges still managed to impress by throwing out 2 different runners attempting to steal in this game. Hedges’ defense is what makes him one of the top catching prospects in all of baseball. If he can keep his average around .260-.270 he’ll be a huge asset for the Padres organization.

Lake Elsinore Storm 6, Lancaster JetHawks 1

Alberth Martinez – CF: 1-4, HR(1), RBI, BB, K, Run scored

Casey McElroy – DH: 0-5, 2K, Run scored

Hunter Renfroe – RF: 2-4, 2B, HR(1), 3RBI, BB, K, Run scored

Gabriel Quintana – 3B: 0-4, 4K

Luis Domoromo – DH: 2-4, HR(1), RBI, K, Run scored

B.J. Guinn – SS: 2-4, 2B, Run scored

Zach Eflin – SP: 6.0 IP, 2H, ER, 3BB, 2K (W, 1-0)

Notes: After a humbling debut to the California League, Hunter Renfroe performed much better tonight. He clubbed a 2-run home run and an RBI double; all 3 of his RBI’s came with 2 outs. Zach Eflin, one of the Padres’ 2012 supplemental 1st round draft picks, was excellent tonight. So far, Eflin has outperformed Max Fried and Walker Weickel, the two other pitchers the Padres drafted high in 2012. Eflin ended last year with a 2.73 ERA across 22 starts and 118.2 innings pitched.

Fort Wayne TinCaps 5, Great Lakes Loons 2

Mallex Smith – CF: 1-4, 2B, K, Run scored

Josh VanMeter – 2B: 3-4, 2B, RBI, 2 Runs scored

Franchy Cordero – SS: 1-4, RBI, 2K

Dustin Peterson – 3B: 3-4, 2B, 3B, 2RBI, Run scored

Franmil Reyes – RF: 0-4, 2K

Dane Phillips – C: 1-3, BB, K, Run scored

Payton Baskette – SP: 4.1 IP, 3H, ER, 3BB, 4K

Notes: The TinCaps rebounded due to a great effort by the Padres 2nd round draft pick in 2013, Dustin Peterson. Peterson had 3 hits and fell a home run shy of the cycle. Despite the victory, the TinCaps still had troubles making contact with the baseball as they struck out 10 times as a team. They have now struck out 26 times over the past two days.
