Daily Farm Round-Up: 4-9-16

The TinCaps put up 9 runs tonight off the strength of the hot bats of Austin Allen and Brad Zunica. Allen and Zunica combined for 5 hits, 2 home runs, and 5 RBIs. The Storm won a close, 1 run game while the Missions came up short against the Cardinals.

Hitting Prospect of the Day: Austin Allen/Brad Zunica

Pitching Prospect of the Day: Caesar Vargas

El Paso Chihuahuas: Postponed (Rain)

San Antonio Missions 4, Springfield Cardinals 6

Nelson Ward – 2B: 0-4, 2K

Jose Rondon – SS: 1-4

Auston Bousfield – CF: 1-4

Yeison Asencio – RF: 1-4, Run scored

Gabriel Quintana – 3B: 1-4, HR(1), RBI, 2 Runs scored

Ryan Miller – C: 1-4, 3B, Run scored

Cesar Vargas – SP: 5.2 IP, 4H, 2ER, 1BB, 7K

Notes: After a rough year with San Antonio in 2015, Jose Rondon has hit safely in all 3 games to start the season. Rondon is closest to the big leagues among the Padres top SS prospects (Rondon, Guerra, and Giron) and a solid showing in Double-A could earn him a spot in the big leagues before long. Cesar Vargas enjoyed a solid start to his season; this was Vargas’ first start at the Double-A level, but he performed well last year as a reliever in Double-A.

Lake Elsinore Storm 3, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 2

Franchy Cordero – CF: 1-5, 2K, Run scored

Luis Urias – 3B: 0-4, BB, Run scored

Javier Guerra – SS: 2-4, RBI, K, Run scored

Trae Santos – 1B: 0-3

Fernando Perez – DH: 1-4, K

Miguel Del Castillo – C: 1-4, K

Martires Arias – SP: 4.1 IP, 4H, 2ER, 2BB, 6K

Jose Torres – RP: 1.1 IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K (H, 2)

Notes: There were more errors in this game (7) than runs (5) but the Storm managed to come out on top. Javier Guerra collected multiple hits in one game for the first time in his Storm career and Jose Torres, who was acquired in the trade that sent Yonder Alonso to Oakland, was extremely solid out of the pen.

Fort Wayne TinCaps 9, Lake County Captains 5

Rod Boykin – LF: 1-4, 3K, 2 Runs scored

Ruddy Giron – SS: 1-4, 2B, RBI, 2K

Michael Gettys – CF: 0-2, RBI, Run scored

Austin Allen – C: 3-4, 2B, HR(1), 2RBI, 2 Runs scored

Brad Zunica – 1B: 2-2, HR(1), 3RBI, 2BB, Run scored

River Stevens – DH: 1-3, 2B, BB, K, 2 Runs scored

Brett Kennedy – SP: 3.0 IP, 4H, 2R, 1ER, 0BB, 2K

Notes: Austin Allen has been on fire to start the season, his 3-for-4 performance tonight actually lowered his average to .800. Allen has 8 hits, 3 runs scored, 3 RBIs and a home run so far this season. Brad Zunica, a 15th round draft pick by the Padres in last year’s draft, hit his first career home run during full season ball. Zunica reached base safely all 4 times he came to the plate tonight.
