Daily Farm Round-Up: 5-16-13

Despite a brilliant start by Justin Hancock and an impressive offensive performance, the TinCaps found a way to lose as their bullpen imploded and lost the lead. Lake Elsinore can’t catch a break as they lose again and their record plummets to 12-27. The Missions were the only team in the Padres organization tonight that managed to win a game. Kalian Sams continues to just flat out hit as his offensive output made a difference in the game. The T-Pads were held to just 4 hits as Cubs starter Matt Garza shut the T-Pads down. Regardless of the lack of offense, Clayton Richard pitched well.

Clayton Richard-SP: 6.0 IP, 4H, ER, 0BB, 8K (L, 0-1)

Notes: Despite turning in a great start, Clayton Richard receives the loss as the T-Pads were shut down my Matt Garza and the Iowa Cubs. Richard looked particularly sharp; he threw a quality start, allowed just 4 hits and held the opposing offense to just a run all while striking out 8. Garza and the Cubs did not allow the T-Pads any extra-base hits; Tucson only had 4 hits by the end of the game.

Notes: Keyvius Sampson finally records his first win in 2013 after enjoying a successful start against the Hooks. Prior to this start, Sampson had not yet thrown for 5 complete innings with the Missions. Kalian Sams continues to put up video game numbers as he just smacked his 6th home run and drove in runs 13, 14, and 15 over a span of just 9 games. Since he joined the Missions, Sams is hitting .357 (10 hits in 28 AB’s). 9 of those 10 hits have gone for extra bases.

Lake Elsinore Storm 5, Modesto Nuts 6

Cory Spangenberg-2B: 1-4, HR(4), RBI, BB, Run scored

Travis Jankowski-CF: 2-4, RBI, Run scored

Trevor Holder-SP: 4.2 IP, 8H, 6R, 3ER, BB, 3K (L, 0-1)

Notes: Cory Spangenberg has found his power stroke this year; with tonight’s home run, Spangenberg set a career high in single season home runs with 4 (he previously had 4 over his 2 year minor league career). After going through a slump, Travis Jankowski has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games; he is hitting .353 over that stretch, and has raised his average to .272.

Fort Wayne TinCaps 6, Bowling Green Hot Rods 7

Mallex Smith-DH: 1-4

Alberth Martinez-CF: 2-5, 3K, Run scored

Rodney Daal-C: 1-4, 3b, 2RBI, 2K

Justin Hancock-SP: 6.0 IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 3K

Notes: In 7 starts this year, Justin Hancock has allowed more than 1 earned run in just one of his starts. Over 40 innings, Hancock has allowed just 6 earned runs (1.35 ERA on the year). Following tonight’s start, Hancock has thrown 4 quality starts in a row and over his last 2 starts, Hancock has thrown 13 scoreless innings. Every member of the TinCap lineup recorded at least 1 hit tonight, however, the bullpen was shelled which ultimately led to Fort Wayne’s demise.
