Daily Farm Round-Up: 5-27-14

The Missions and the TinCaps won 1-run games today due to the bats of Austin Hedges and Franmil Reyes, respectively. The Chihuahuas lost in Odrisamer Despaigne’s first Triple-A start.

Hitting Prospect of the Day: Austin Hedges

Pitching Prospect of the Day: James Needy

El Paso Chihuahuas 5, Las Vegas 51s 8

Alex Castellanos – CF: 3-4, RBI, Run scored

Brooks Conrad – 2B: 1-4, 2K

Jake Goebbert – LF: 1-5, 2B, 2K, Run scored

Jeff Francoeur – RF: 3-4, 3B, 2RBI, BB, K, Run scored

Jonathan Galvez – 3B: 1-4, RBI, BB, 2K

Tyler Greene – SS: 1-4, 2B, K, Run scored

Odrisamer Despaigne – SP: 4.0 IP, 5H, 4ER, 5BB, 4K (L, 0-1)

Notes: Odrisamer Despaigne did not fare well in his first start with the Chihuahuas. Despaigne’s biggest issue with the Missions was the amount of walks he allowed, and those issues followed him up to the Chihuahuas as he walked 5 batters over just 4 innings pitched.

San Antonio Missions 3, NW Arkansas Naturals 2

Reymond Fuentes – CF: 1-5

Yeison Asencio – RF: 2-4

Casey McElroy – 2B: 0-0, 3BB, HBP

Rymer Liriano – LF: 0-4, K

Austin Hedges – C: 2-3, HR(4), RBI, BB, 2 Runs scored

Robert Kral – DH: 1-4, HR(2), 2RBI, Run scored

James Needy – SP: 6.0 IP, 6H, ER, 0BB, 6K (W, 3-3)

Johnny Barbato – RP: 1.0 IP, H, 0ER, 0BB, K (S, 14)

Notes: Austin Hedges broke a 3 game hitless streak with a solo shot in the 2nd inning. In light of Yasmani Grandal’s injury today, Hedges’ days in San Antonio may be numbered as he could receive a call to the big leagues. James Needy has only allowed 1 run in each of his last 4 starts. It’s been a solid year for Needy who has posted a 2.93 ERA over 8 starts this year.

Lake Elsinore Storm 0, Lancaster JetHawks 7

Corey Adamson – DH: 0-4

Diego Goris – SS: 0-4, 3K

Alberth Martinez – CF: 1-4

Hunter Renfroe – RF: 0-4, K

Jeremy Baltz – LF: 1-3

Gabriel Quintana – 3B: 2-3

Joe Ross – SP: 6.1 IP, 5H, 5R, 3ER, BB, 5K (L, 5-3)

Notes: The Storm did Joe Ross no favors today. Ross tossed a quality start, but received no run support while 3 Storm errors contributed to 2 unearned runs. The Storm didn’t record a single extra-base hit in this game.

Fort Wayne TinCaps 5, Dayton Dragons 4

Mallex Smith – CF: 1-3, BB

Dustin Peterson – 3B: 0-3, BB, 2K, Run scored

Fernando Perez – 2B: 0-4, K

Franmil Reyes – RF: 2-4, HR(6), 2RBI, K, 2 Runs scored

Jake Bauers – 1B: 1-3, BB, K, Run scored

Henry Charles – LF: 2-4, 2B, 2RBI

Walker Weickel – SP: 6.0 IP, 4H, 3ER, 3BB, 4K, HR Allowed

Notes: Walker Weickel turned in his first quality start since April 26th today. Hopefully Weickel builds off this start and starts improving on a season that has seen him post a 6.84 ERA over 10 starts. Dustin Peterson came into this game having driven in a run in each of his last 4 games. While he didn’t drive in a run today, his 40 RBI’s lead the Midwest League.
