Daily Farm Round-Up: 6-18-13

Excellent starting pitching provided all 3 farm teams that played today with W’s. Led by 2013 draft picks Bryan Verbitsky and Justin Livengood, Eugene recorded a shutout. Not only did the Missions enjoy a masterful start from Matt Andriese, but the offense scored 8 runs for the second night in a row. Jeudy Valdez was just a double short of the cycle. Burch Smith enjoyed a solid outing while Kevin Quackenbush made his Triple-A debut as the T-Pads won 5-2.

Notes: After a rough stint in the major leagues, Burch Smith has handled the task of Triple-A with ease. Smith has gone at least 5 innings while allowing 2 runs or less in all 4 of his starts. He has 21 strikeouts in 21.1 innings and boasts a 2.53 ERA with Tucson. Kevin Quackenbush made his Tucson debut and threw 2 scoreless innings with 2 strikeouts as he recorded the W. Dean Anna recorded a couple of hits and a couple of RBI’s. With Everth Cabrera being placed on the DL, it is possible that he will receive a call up to the big leagues.

Cory Spangenberg-2B: 1-4, BB, Run scored

Notes: Jeudy Valdez went 3-4 and tripled for the 2nd night in a row and 3rd time in his last 4 games. After enduring an 0-12 mini slump, Valdez has turned it on and has hit safely in 6 of his last 7 games. Matt Andriese continues his domination of Double-A as he lowered his ERA to 1.99 with 5 shutout innings. Andriese hasn’t allowed more than 3 earned runs in a start since April 19th and hasn’t lost a decision since May 15th (his only loss on the year).

Notes: While the offense still wasn’t productive, the Emeralds won off the strength of their pitching. Bryan Verbitsky, a 2013 3rd round draft pick, made his professional debut and shutout the Hops over 3 innings while recording 5 strikeouts. Justin Livengood, a 10th selection in the 2013 draft, made his second professional appearance. Over the 2 appearances, Livengood has tossed 3 innings while allowing 2 hits and collecting 5 strikeouts.
