Daily Farm Round-Up: 7-24-13

Offense was a problem for the farm teams that occupy the three highest levels of the minor leagues. Tucson had just 5 hits, the Missions were shutout, and Lake Elsinore was held to 4 hits. On the lower levels of the farm, Zach Eflin turned in an excellent start while 2013 first round pick, Hunter Renfroe, went yard and 2013 second round pick, Dustin Peterson, had 2 RBI’s.

Tucson Padres 3, Tacoma Rainiers 5

Dan Robertson-CF: 1-3, BB, K, 2 Runs scored

Dean Anna-2B: 1-4

Gregorio Petit-SS: 1-4, RBI, K

Brandon Allen-LF: 1-4, RBI, Run scored

Scott Moore-3B: 0-2, 2BB

Anthony Bass-SP: 5.0 IP, 7H, 4ER, 2BB, 0K, HR Allowed (L, 2-4)

Notes: The T-Pads just had 5 hits in tonight’s losing affair. Starter Anthony Bass had another disappointing start at the Triple-A level. For the first time this year, Bass failed to get a strikeout in a start. Bass has had a major home run problem over his last 4 starts; Bass has allowed 7 home runs in that time and his ERA has ballooned to 7.45.

San Antonio Missions 0, Corpus Christi Hooks 5

Rico Noel-CF: 2-3, BB

Reymond Fuentes-LF: 0-4, 3K

Tommy Medica-DH: 2-4, K

Johan Limonta-1B: 0-3, BB, K

Yeison Asencio-RF: 1-4, 2B, K

Jeudy Valdez-SS: 1-3, K

Cory Spangenberg-2B: 0-3

Juan Oramas-SP: 3.1 IP, 4H, 4R, 2ER, 2BB, 3K, HR Allowed (L, 0-2)

Clay Zavada-RP: 2.0 IP, H, ER, 2BB, HR Allowed

Notes: Prior to tonight’s start, Juan Oramas had not allowed a run over his last 2 starts, a span on 9 innings. Unfortunately, Oramas’ modest scoreless streak came to and end and the Missions were unable to offer him any run support. Oramas has posted nice strikeout totals with the Missions (25 K’s in 18.1 innings), but his ERA is high at 5.40 and his record stands at 0-2. Clay Zavada allowed his first earned run with the Missions tonight. Zavada has been very dependable since joining the team; he’s only allowed 4 hits in 9 innings.

Lake Elsinore Storm 1, High Desert Mavericks 6

Travis Jankowski-CF: 1-4, 2K, Run scored

Kyle Gaedele-RF: 1-4

Justin Hancock-SP: 3.2 IP, 2H, 6R, 2ER, 4BB (L, 2-3)

Notes: It was a rough night offensively for the Storm as they were limited to 4 hits over 9 innings. For the second start in a row, Justin Hancock has been unable to complete 4 innings. This was Hancock’s first start with the Storm in which he was unable to record a single strikeout. Hancock has made 7 starts for the Storm and, after a fast start, he seems to have hit a rough patch.

Fort Wayne TinCaps 9, West Michigan 2

Mallex Smith-CF: 2-4, BB, Run scored

Tyler Stubblefield-SS: 0-4, BB, Run scored

Diego Goris-1B: 2-4, RBI, K, Run scored

Zach Eflin-SP: 7.0 IP, 4H, 2R, ER, 0BB, 3K

Notes: Zach Eflin, who was a first round draft pick in 2012, continues to dominate the opposition at the Single-A level. While Eflin didn’t have a great strikeout total in tonight’s start, he allowed just 4 hits and didn’t walk a single batter in 7 innings. Over his last 10 starts, Eflin owns a 4-2 record with a 2.05 ERA. On the year, Eflin has made 17 starts in which he’s totaled 89.1 innings, and 71 strikeouts while boasting an ERA of 3.02.

Eugene Emeralds 5, Boise Hawks 1

Notes: Hunter Renfroe had one of his best games as a professional. Renfroe went 3-4 and raised his average to .315 while homering and driving in 2 runs. Renfroe has 3 home runs over 54 AB’s this year. Fernando Perez homered for the second time in 99 AB’s with Eugene. Perez made a rare appearance a second base tonight; his natural position is third base.

AZL Padres 10, AZL Brewers 3

Rod Boykin-LF: 1-5, RBI, BB, K

Dustin Peterson-3B: 2-4, 2RBI, Run scored

Following his 2-hit game tonight, Josh VanMeter is hitting .417 over his last 10 games. VanMeter has raised his average to .293. Jose Urena had one of his best games of the season as he went 3-4 with 3 extra base hits and 2 RBI.
