Daily Farm Round-Up: 7-30-14

There were strong pitching performances throughout the farm tonight, but none were stronger than the no-hitter tossed by the Missions trio of James Needy, Frank Garces, and R.J. Alvarez.

Hitting Prospect of the Day: Trea Turner

Pitching Prospect of the Day: James Needy

El Paso Chihuahuas 8, Las Vegas 51s 5

Jace Peterson – SS: 2-4, BB, K, Run scored

Tyler Greene – 3B: 1-3, HR(4), 2RBI, Run scored

Jake Goebbert – RF: 0-5, K

Rymer Liriano – CF: 2-5, 2B, 2K, Run scored

Cody Decker – 1B: 2-4, HR(15), RBI, BB, K, 2 Runs scored

Taylor Lindsey – 2B: 2-5, 2B, HR(9), 2RBI, 2 Runs scored

Donn Roach – SP: 5.2 IP, 5H, 1R, 0ER, 5BB, 2K (W, 3-4)

Notes: Taylor Lindsey smacked his first home run as a member of the Chihuahuas. Lindsey hasn’t been great since joining the Chihuahuas, but he is now on a 3 game multi-hit streak and has driven in 2 runs in each of his last 2 games. Jace Peterson has just 4 hits over 6 games since being sent down.

San Antonio Missions 6, Corpus Christi Hooks 0

Cory Spangenberg – 2B: 0-5, K

Casey McElroy – 3B: 2-5, Run scored

Yeison Asencio – LF: 1-4, RBI, BB

Alex Dickerson – RF: 2-4, 2B, RBI, BB, Run scored

Hunter Renfroe – CF: 0-3, BB, 3K, Run scored

Austin Hedges – C: 1-4, K, Run scored

James Needy – SP: 7.0 IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 7K (W, 8-3)

Frank Garces – RP: 1.0 IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K

R.J. Alvarez – RP: 1.0 IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K

Notes: James Needy, Frank Garces, and R.J. Alvarez combined to toss the Missions’ first no-hitter since 1984. Had it not been for a throwing error from Diego Goris, the 3 pitchers would have combined for a perfect game (the error was initially ruled a hit, and was overturned after the conclusion of the game). Over his last 10 starts, James Needy is 4-0 with a 2.87 ERA.

Lake Elsinore Storm 1, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 11

Mallex Smith – CF: 1-3, BB, K, Run scored

Jose Rondon – SS: 0-3, BB, K

Benji Gonzalez – 2B: 1-4, RBI, K

Alberth Martinez – LF: 1-4

Gabriel Quintana – 3B: 1-2

Jeremy Baltz – DH: 1-3, BB, K

Coby Cowgill – SP: 1.0 IP, 2H, 5ER, 4BB, 2K (L, 3-2)

Notes: There really weren’t any positives in this game for the Storm. The offense only managed to score 1 run while going 1-for-11 with RISP, the defense committed 2 errors, and the pitching allowed 11 runs, 10 of which were earned. Mallex Smith has now hit safely in 7 of his last 10 games; Smith is hitting .375 over that time.

Fort Wayne TinCaps 4, Great Lakes Loons 0

Trea Turner – DH: 2-5, HR(1), 2RBI, 2K, Run scored

Ronnie Richardson – CF: 2-5, 2K, Run scored

Fernando Perez – 3B: 0-3, BB

Franmil Reyes – RF: 0-4, K

Jake Bauers – 1B: 1-3, RBI, BB, K

Nick Schulz – LF: 3-4, RBI, K

Kyle Lloyd – SP: 6.0 IP, 2H, 0ER, 1BB, 8K (W, 5-4)

Notes: Trea Turner hit his first home run for the TinCaps tonight. Turner has hit safely in 15 of his first 16 games with Fort Wayne; he has a triple slash of .476/.548/.667 over his first 63 AB’s. Kyle Lloyd has now tossed 2 scoreless starts in a row; over that time, Lloyd is 2-0 with 15 strikeouts over 11.2 innings pitched.

Eugene Emeralds 7, Everett AquaSox 10

Travis Jankowski – CF: 1-5, K

Auston Bousfield – LF: 1-5, 3B, 2K, Run scored

Franchy Cordero – SS: 2-4, HR(7), 2RBI, K, 2 Runs scored

Nick Torres – DH: 1-4, RBI, K, Run scored

Yale Rosen – RF: 2-4, 2B, 2K

Logan Jernigan – SP: 5.0 IP, 5H, 3R, 2ER, 3BB, 2K, HR Allowed (L, 0-2)

Notes: Franchy Cordero is now on a 6 game hitting streak. Over that span, Cordero has hit 2 home runs and has driven in 4 runs. Cordero is hitting .284 with 7 home runs and 22 RBI’s over 162 AB’s with the Ems.

Three weeks after I was born, Padre legend Tony Gwynn visited my hospital and handed out teddy bears to all the newborn children, including me. I have been a Padre fan ever since. Whether SD is in the midst of an exciting playoff run, or an uneventful off-season, I love following them and I love writing about them.
