Daily Farm Round-Up: 7-6-13 

Both the AZL Padres and the Missions had trouble against opposing pitching as they scored a combined 3 runs. Fernando Perez and Lee Orr had great night’s offensively as they led the Emeralds and the Storm respectively to victories. James Needy and the Storm pitching staff held the Blaze to just 1 run in their 5-1 victory.

Notes: Tonight marked the first time Tommy Medica failed to collect a hit since his return from the DL. Yeison Asencio has experienced very similar results in San Antonio as he did in Lake Elsinore. Asencio is hitting .294 over 109 AB’s with San Antonio after hitting .296 over 243 AB’s in Lake Elsinore. Clay Zavada made his second appearance with the Missions and threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout.

Notes: Jeremy Baltz has now collected a hit in all 16 games he’s played in with the Storm. In those 16 games Baltz is hitting .385 with 4 home runs and 19 RBI. Travis Jankowski has been scuffling at the plate lately; he’s hitting just .214 with a .283 OBP over his last 10 games with just 2 extra-base hits. Despite his low OBP, he has stolen 5 bases over that span. Lee Orr started off the season at a torrid pace; he hit .378 in the month of April. However, he cooled off in the month of May as he hit just .138 over 17 May games. After enduring an injury-plagued June, Orr is looking to regain his April form. Orr’s 2 home runs tonight were his first since April.

Notes: Bryan Rodriguez turned in his first quality start of the year. In limited action this year Rodriguez owns a 3.13 ERA. Dane Phillips smacked his first extra-base hits since June 27th. On the year, over 183 AB’s, Phillips is hitting .273 with 4 home runs and 20 RBI. After dominating for most of the year, Roman Madrid has endured massive struggles recently. Madrid has allowed 10 runs over his last 7.1 innings pitched. Madrid collected his first save since June 11th.

Fernando Perez followed up last night’s game, in which he went 0-6, with a 2-run home run and 4 RBI’s. Michael Bass, the Padres’ 27th round pick in the 2013 draft, collected 4 hits and raised his average to .306 across 49 AB’s with Eugene.

Notes: It was a rough night for the AZL Padres offensively as they only managed to collect 3 hits. Mason Smith and Josh Van Meter, who were selected in the 4th and 5th round respectively of the 2013 draft, both continued to struggle with the AZL Padres. Smith is hitting .205 over 39 AB’s while Van Meter is hitting .179 over 39 AB’s.
