Daily Farm Round-Up: 7-8-13

3 different minor leaguers enjoyed a perfect night at the plate today: Franchy Cordero went 5-5 in the AZL Padres’ 11-3 victory, Dane Phillips went 4-4 in the TinCaps’ 6-5 victory, and Kalian Sams went 3-3 in Tucson’s 7-0 defeat. Justin Hancock endured his first rough patch with the Storm as Lake Elsinore was blown out 12-1. Despite strong performances form Bryan Verbitsky and Tayron Guerrero, the Emeralds lost a tight one 2-1.
Hitting Prospect of the Day: Franchy Cordero

Tucson Padres 0, Tacoma Rainiers 7

Gregorio Petit-3B: 1-3, BB
Kalian Sams-RF: 3-3
Matt Andriese-SP: 6.0 IP, 8H, 3ER, 0BB, 4K (L, 1-1)
Notes: Yonder Alonso began his rehab with Tucson. The plan for Alonso is for him to rehab a couple more days with Tucson and then join the big league club in time for their final series against San Francisco before the ASB. Matt Andriese tossed his second quality start in a row, but it was not enough as the Rainiers starting pitcher, top prospect James Paxton, tossed a complete game shutout. The only batter Paxton had trouble with was Kalian Sams as Sams reached base all 3 times he stepped to the plate.

Justin Hancock-SP: 3.1 IP, 7H, 5ER, 2BB, 3K (L, 2-1)
Notes: Over his first 3 starts with the Storm, Justin Hancock allowed 1 earned run in 16 innings pitched. Unfortunately, Hancock couldn’t continue the trend as he allowed 5 earned runs over 3.2 innings tonight. As a result of the poor start, Hancock’s ERA rose from 0.56 to 2.75. After starting his Storm career with a 16 game hit streak, Jeremy Baltz has been hitless over his last 2 games. In a game where the Storm committed a whopping 6 errors, Austin Hedges still continued to show off his great defense as he picked of a runner at first.

Roman Madrid-RP: 1.0 IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 0K (S, 14)
Notes: Walker Weickel struck out less than 4 batters for the first time in a start since June 7th. Weickel hasn’t been as effective as his fellow 2012 first round draft pick pitchers (Max Fried and Zach Eflin). Weickel owns a 4.67 ERA over 71.1 innings in which he has stuck out 54 batters. Dane Phillips had 4 base hits and reached base all 5 times he was at the plate. Phillips raised his average to .289 on the year.

Adrian De Horta-SP: 3.0 IP, H, 0R, 0BB, 4K
Notes: The AZL Padres managed to score 11 runs without the aid of a home run. Rod Boykin, the Padres 12th round pick in the 2013 draft, has enjoyed a very successful start to his professional career. Over 11 games Boykin is hitting .355 with 3 RBI’s. Franchy Cordero was a perfect 5-5 with a walk. Cordero raised his average to a robust .397 over 58 AB’s.
