Daily Friar 1.1.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Happy New Year to the Friarhood! If you are reading this that means you! We are one big family here at the Friarhood and are looking forward to 2013 and all the fresh opportunities it brings us. The Friarhood has a fancy new website we have been using for a little while now, and soon the Padres will start their brand new season in hopes of putting a solid product on the field. Speaking of the field, there will be a new thing there this year as well in that the fences will be moved in some. So many fresh changes for the new year, it gets me excited to see how this year will play out. As always too this is the Friarhood, so you can be assured that there will be plenty of fun things to do during the season. As always keep checking back to the website and the Facebook page for anything that will come up. Let’s get to those first links of the new year:

Padres count on picking up where they left off – Padres.com

“While the Padres are optimistic they’ll finish better than they did in 2012, they, like the other 29 teams in Major League Baseball, enter a new year with their share of questions. Here they are.”

Jim Callis has an updated draft board – Baseball America

“I traditionally use Ask BA to update the draft order, and I’ll do so below. Only four potential compensation free agents remain on the market (Braves outfielder Michael Bourn, Nationals first baseman Adam LaRoche, Cardinals righthander Kyle Lohse, Yankees righty Rafael Soriano).”

Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of Roberto Clemente’s passing – MLBTR

“MLBTR’s Mark Polishuk paid tribute to Roberto Clemente who lost his life 40 years ago today in a plane crash off the coast of Puerto Rico. Clemente was on a mission of mercy delivering emergency supplies to earthquake-ravaged Nicaragua.”

Below are links to happenings around MLB and the NL West

Royals sign Miguel Tejada and Endy Chavez - MLB.com

“The club signed outfielder Endy Chavez and infielder — and former American League Most Valuable Player Award winner — Miguel Tejada to Minor League deals.”

Mark Newman looks ahead to the 2013 season – MLB.com

“Considering how important superstition remains in baseball — an institution that always mirrors society — the fact that no one really sees No. 13 as a dubious distinction in the sport anymore means we can turn the calendar enthusiastically. In fact, it is possible that more fans are fired up about a New Year than ever before. We are lucky.”

Dodgers find pair of power lefties – Fangraphs

“In 2012, four left-handed pitchers touched 93-plus on my radar gun. In Onelki Garcia and Chris Reed, Dodgers prospects accounted for half the list.”
