Daily Friar 1.2.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

I hope that you all had a wonderful New Year’s Day doing whatever your heart desired. I know for a lot of people it is back to reality today; back to work, back to whatever life brings for you. Someone should tell the Padres front office to get back to work, am I right? Anyways, it has been slow as we all know and it seems that everybody the Padres show interest in gets swiped away from us (it happened again last night). Some interesting news of late also, apparently John Moores’ company, JMI, has purchased XX-1090. It has been all over twitter without an official news release yet. I will post a link below which has some of those twitter feeds for you to look at. Also today Baseball Prospectus has released their top 10 prospects list. It is exciting to see the list each year, but in order to read the stats on everybody you are going to have to pay. So let’s get to those links for today:

Padres Top 10 prospects – Baseball Prospectus
Austin Hedges leap frogs everybody to be number one:

“What Happened in 2012: Hedges’s bat was better than advertised, as the defensive wizard showed signs of life and promise at the plate.”

MadFriars interviews Jason Parks who made the list

“For this year’s list after talking with scouts and what I have seen myself I do like players like Austin Hedges, Rymer Liriano and Max Fried more than Jedd Gyorko, Casey Kelly and Robbie Erlin because I think eventually they will have more impact.”

The Twitter feeds about John Moores – The Ghost of Ray Kroc

“Are you freaking kidding me? I thought we rode this guy out on a rail, tarred & feathered?”

The Indians are taking/looking at pitchers Padres have had interest in:

Indians sign Brett Myers – Pro Rumors

“The Cleveland Indians have signed pitcher Brett Myers to a one-year deal worth $7mm plus an option for a second season, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.”

Indians have talked to Shaun Marcum – MLBTR

“The Indians have had dialogue with free agent starter Shaun Marcum, a source tells Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. However, it’s not yet clear how today’s signing of Brett Myers will impact their pursuit of Marcum.”

Trading Giancarlo Stanton – Hardball Times

“If the Marlins move Stanton, they must be sure to do it right. When they cleaned house after their last title and traded Josh Beckett, they got Hanley Ramirez in return. If they’re going to make a similar move, they need to get a similar centerpiece-type player they can build around”
