Daily Friar 1.22.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Lots of articles to get to today, so I will keep this short and sweet. I have three articles from that I think are pretty important. Two are directly related to the Padres and one is indirectly related. Just a little tease of the latter, the Reds are getting the All-Star game in 2015. This means now that the earliest the Padres could get it is in 2017, since the AL and NL switch off each year. Petco opened in 2004 so this would put it at 13 years after opening that it could possibly get the All-Star game. This to me is pretty sad considering most of the new ballparks got the game within a year or two of opening. Why are we the last ones? The new ownership has said they will try to get one; we can only hope. There are only 5 teams who have had to wait longer for an All-Star game than the Padres (8 if you include the 3 that will be getting it in the next 3 years). So much for short and sweet, well let’s get to those articles:

Last year’s strong finishers hope for big starts –

“Is a strong finish enough to ensure a better start the next time around? San Diego will return virtually the same roster in 2013.”

The top 10 left-handed pitching prospects –
Max Fried is number 3:

“He has a great three-pitch mix in his fastball, curve and changeup and all of them could end up being above-average pitches. Fried has the stuff, the frame and the feel for pitching to be a top-of-the-rotation type starter.”

Fowler’s negotiating prowess serves the Padres well – Union Tribune

“In my view, Fowler has already pulled off one miracle when it comes to the Padres. Why shouldn’t the Padres executive chairman be able to negotiate a deal to get the Padres on television sets throughout the county?”

Ken Rosenthal has some interesting talking points including Headley for Upton – Fox Sports

“Upton obviously would be a strong return, but the Padres might bristle at the notion of Headley producing even bigger numbers at hitter-friendly Chase Field — not to mention seeing him 18 times a year.”

Phil Mickelson apologizes for tax comments – NBC San Diego

“He said it was the reason behind his decision not to be part of the new ownership group of the San Diego Padres.”

Seedlings to Stars is up to #71-80 on their top prospect countdown
Number 75 is Jedd Gyorko

“Bold Prediction: Either Headley or Gyorko is traded by the Padres before Spring Training 2014.”

An interview with Billy Gasparino – MadFriars

“Billy Gasparino joined the Padres from Toronto before the 2012 season as a national cross-checker. This fall, he was promoted into the role of scouting director after Jaron Madison departed for the Cubs.”

Sisterhood of the Traveling Jersey makes its way back to London – Gaslamp Ball

“Needless to say, it was sufficiently awkward… Well, sort of. Just when we parted ways. I gave him a thumbs up and he kind of just walked away.”

Three for the Show: First Basemen – Chris Kelly of The Friarhood

“If the depth chart at catcher presents an “opportunity for improvement,” then first base can be considered a straight up reclamation project.”

2015 All-Star game awarded to Cincinnati Reds –

“The 2015 All-Star Game will be hosted by the Reds and Cincinnati, and the announcement will be made on Wednesday, sources confirmed to on Tuesday morning.”
