Daily Friar 1.24.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

It was a big evening and early morning for Major League Baseball so far today. Some of the bigger free agent names have been locked up and a huge trade finally happened that involves a team from the NL West. There is still one big name out there right now on the free agent market that hasn’t signed yet and that is Michael Bourn. He will sign eventually, we all know that. It is just a matter of where, when and for how much. The problem with Bourn is he comes with the draft pick clause that was agreed on in the latest CBA. The team that signs him will have to surrender a draft pick in the early rounds of this years draft. The Mets are interested in having him, but they cherish their draft picks as well. Like I said though, he will sign at some point and after today’s trade I think that signing time will come sooner than later. Today’s piece is more MLB heavy, but there isn’t a whole lot on the Padres today, again. Here are your links for today:

Top prospect countdown #31-40 – Seedlings to Stars
#36 is Rymer Liriano

“2012 was a step back for Liriano, but it shouldn’t be viewed as a new norm despite the jump to a higher level of competition. He still could prove to be a big piece for the Padres rebuilding efforts in the years ahead.”

The latest news from around the league:
