Daily Friar 1.3.12

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

I won’t try to take too much space up here as there is a lot to get to in the links below. As many of you saw yesterday with the picture that was posted on the Facebook page, the fences at Petco are coming along nicely. Like many of you I have only seen what they look like from pictures as I haven’t made my way down there to see how it is going along. Just to be clear though, the fences that you see now are temporary construction fences. The real fences will be back much farther than on the grass. I’m sure many of you will see it first hand when FanFest comes around next month, which the date has been announced today as well. I will have all that information below along with many good links:

Padres announce dates for 2013 FanFest and annual awards dinner – Padres Statement, more info on

Petco Park fences on the move – CBS Sports

“The move of the fences won’t make it into a hitters’ park by any stretch. Instead, it’s likely to get the park closer to neutral.”

Andrew Cashner to open season on disabled list – NBC Sports

“here was some initial hope that he would be able to recover in time for the opening of the 2013 regular season, but it’s not going to happen. The right-hander will aim to debut by the end of April.”

Jeff Pearlman interviews Tom Verducci; Ken Caminiti becomes a topic –

“He told me he had nothing to hide. Not once, not even off the record, did he mention the name of any other player. His personal accountability was stark and courageous.”

Implications of the new schedule for the NL DH – Fangraphs

“As cross-platform play goes from something that happens in the middle of June, once a year, like some sort of strange exhibition mini-season, to something that happens every week, the National League will have to re-evaluate their past strategies for American League parks.”

Former Padre Matt Antonelli signs with Cleveland – Seedlings to Stars

“Despite a rough 2012 season between the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankee organizations, former 1st Round pick (#17 overall, 2006) Matt Antonelli has signed a minor league deal with the Cleveland Indians, according to Baseball America’s Matt Eddy.”

Padres 100 to 1 to win the World Series – The Friarhood

“It should come as no surprise that a team that finished in 4th place and has done nothing to improve during the first half of the off-season is still considered a long shot.”
