Daily Friar 1.30.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

The fallout of the news out of Miami yesterday has been quite interesting to say the least. In all at least seven major leaguers were named in the article from the Miami New Times. Among these names are known users Bartolo Colon, Melky Cabrera and Yasmani Grandal. But it has also named Alex Rodriguez, Gio Gonzalez, Cesar Carillo, and Nelson Cruz. All very big names around the majors and sure to create some waves during the coming season. The Rangers have lost Josh Hamilton to the Angels this offseason and were looking at Cruz to continue to be their big bat. Now there is the risk of losing him for the better part of the season. Interesting to note that the Padres have two connections on this list in the form of Grandal and Carillo. As far as I know though there is no connection between the two players other than that as Carillo was with the Tigers last season. The article then goes on to say there could be up to 20 players eventually named in this scandal. For those that missed the article in yesterday’s Daily Friar, I will include’s Reader’s Digest version for you today:

Several big leaguers in Miami  clinic’s PED notes –

“Major League Baseball is gathering and reviewing information regarding Tuesday’s report in the Miami New Times that linked at least seven Major Leaguers to performance-enhancing substances via a recently closed clinic in Miami, but also expressed confidence that the developments demonstrate the scope of the sport’s anti-doping efforts.”

Five Padres make the top 100 prospect list –

“Infielder Jedd Gyorko (50), pitcher Max Fried (53), outfielder Rymer Liriano (55), pitcher Casey Kelly (69) and catcher Austin Hedges (73) all made the list.”

Padres’ Hedges a keeper at catcher –

“It’s hard to imagine Hedges having a better teacher. Ausmus, a veteran of 18 Major League seasons (his first four in San Diego) and the owner of three National League Gold Glove awards, actually helped scout Hedges after taking his first front-office position in November 2010.”

So far, World Baseball Classic has been lost on USA – Union Tribune

“Unless the United States wins the third WBC that begins March 2 with Japan vs. Brazil in Fukuoka and Australia vs. Chinese Taipei in Taichung, Taiwan — or at least manages to make the gold-medal game on March 19 at AT&T Park in San Francisco — there’s a very real danger that Americans will completely give up what little interest they seem to have for a global event decided on their own soil.”

Poll: Should the Padres extend Chase Headley? – MLBTR

“However, Headley is getting expensive — he could require a commitment of $50MM-plus — and Jedd Gyorko looms as an affordable internal alternative. Plus, the Padres can’t be completely sure Headley will replicate his 2012 numbers. Should they pursue an extension for Headley?”

Padres sign Arturo Lopez to minor league contract – NBC Sports

“Lopez posted an ugly 6.44 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and 81/32 K/BB ratio in 86 2/3 innings last season in the Mexican League. He’s doubtful to climb all the way to San Diego.”

Some notes from The Friarhood – Steve Adler

“The Padres have announced they agreed to minor league contracts with Tim Stauffer, Freddy Garcia, and LHP Arturo Lopez.”
