Daily Friar 1.31.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

The Padres are getting through their arbitration eligible players pretty quickly this season. Over the past week we have seen guys sign for another year in agreement with the club and not have to go through the ugly arbitration process. I was a little worried that Chase Headley would be the player to go through that since his filing number and the team’s were so far apart. However, as we saw last night, the Padres announced that they have come to an agreement with Headley. More on that can be found below via the Union Tribune. Normally I would post something like this from the Padres website, but they have another great article up that I want you all to read, and I don’t like posting multiple articles from the same source if I can avoid it. Other than the Headley news it has been pretty status quo for the squad. I also have a link below regarding the MLB and the clinic and Miami, which will probably be a common article for a while until we get a decision on what to do with that. Here are your links for today:

Logan Forsythe now taking fly balls in the outfield – Padres.com

“It’s clear the organization wants to see more of the 26-year-old, as it’s asked him to start taking fly balls in the outfield this week at Petco Park. It’s all part of San Diego’s plan to have Forsythe serve a super-utility role for the upcoming season.”

Chase Headley and the Padres agree to a one year deal – Union Tribune

“Headley and the Padres Wednesday night agreed to a one-year contract for 2013 that will pay Headley $8.575 million.”

Freddy Garcia and the value of broken starters - Fangraphs

“In terms of rate stats, Garcia has been a pretty close match to the league averages. He walks a few less, strikes out a few less, and gives up a few more home runs, but he’s also pitched in some hitter friendly ballparks, so overall, his per inning performance has been pretty solid.”

Padres must extend Chase Headley for the long term – Steve Adler of The Friarhood

“Personally, I’m not a fan of over-spending, but if you are going to spend a few million extra on a guy, I can’t think of a player on this roster I’d feel more comfortable spending that money on than Chase Headley.”

MLB to expand investigation into Miami-area clinic – MLB.com

“Yahoo! Sports first reported that MLB officials will shortly go to Florida to meet with the publication’s editors and lawyers to see if they can obtain the records that are said to implicate Alex Rodriguez, Nelson Cruz and Gio Gonzalez, along with three players who have previously been suspended for using performance-enhancing substances: Melky Cabrera, Bartolo Colon and Yasmani Grandal.”

D-Backs and Martin Prado agree to four year deal – MLBTR

“The Diamondbacks announced they have agreed to a four-year contract through 2016 with infielder/outfielder Martin Prado.  The deal will pay Prado $40MM in total, a source tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.”
