Daily Friar 1.5.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

I love days like today. People are writing articles about the Padres and are sparking interest in the club yet again. As I am typing this up I am looking at the tabs that I have open to see what I am going to post for you all; today I have eight tabs. It makes my job so much easier when I have material to post (obviously). The good news today too is that majority of the articles are Padre related, instead of having a majority MLB or half and half. There is some news to post from around the MLB though as there were some signings yesterday, including another one from the Dodgers. So let’s get to those articles now:

Headley eyes strong follow-up to breakout year –

“‘I expect a lot out of myself. And I do think that the norm of my career will be much closer to last season than the years before that,’ Headley said. ‘I feel like I’m closer to being that type of player … having that success I had last year, gives me a lot of confidence going forward.'”

What the Padres can do to compete in 2013 – Sports Out West

“If the Padres add another starting pitcher and a veteran bat the Friars could certainly compete for the first or second wild card spot in the National League.”

The new fences from a Rockies fan perspective – Rox Pile

“You had seen too many fly balls die in that thick air and fall harmlessly into an outfielder’s glove. Can we unlearn that skepticism?”

Matt Clark is taking his talents to Japan – The Friarhood

“San Diego Padres first-base prospect Matt Clark has elected to play for the Chunichi Dragons in 2013.  Clark broke the news himself via twitter”

All’s Quiet on the Western Front – Chris Kelly of The Friarhood

“At this point, it seems the team isn’t willing to budge with its minor league talent to bring an arm in. The next month will be interesting to see if the club is willing to make a move to bring in an arm.”

News from around the MLB follow below:

Matt Kemp and Chad Billingsley are progressing from their injuries –

Matt Kemp and Chad Billingsley, two of the most prominent Dodgers rehabbing injuries, have made it to this point in the offseason without a physical setback, according to their agent.”

Dodgers to sign J.P. Howell – MLBTR

“The Dodgers have agreed to sign J.P. Howell to a one-year deal worth a little less than $3MM, reports ESPN’s Buster Olney.”

Cubs sign Dontrelle Willis to minor league deal –

“Jon Heyman reported the left-hander was invited to the Minor League camp, but may get some Cactus League innings, depending on how he does.”
