Daily Friar 1.7.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Here we are at yet another Monday. For many it means back to school and work after the holidays, so back to the grind we go. For the Padres it is one more day to getting the season started. I am actually writing this from my hotel room in Arizona. I am out here visiting family for a couple of days, but baseball is on my mind as I am a matter of blocks from the Peoria Sports Complex. It is a magical place full of mystique and wonder that comes to life every spring. This year will be no different once things get started late next month. I know I for one will be coming out at some point (probably in March) to watch the Padres play a couple of games. For those that haven’t been, it is a great time. For those that have been out here you know what I am talking about. I can’t wait. For now though let’s read some articles:

Arbitration Breakdown: Chase Headley – MLBTR

“As a result of a largely average history with the bat, Headley only made $3.475MM in 2012, but the model has him projected to earn $8.3MM next year, a $4.825MM raise.”

Anthony Bass gives back – MI Prep Zone

“This year, Bass has come together with Kelley to arrange an Anthony Bass Pitching Camp at Wayne State. The camp will be held on Jan. 26 and is open to aspiring pitchers from grades 3-12 at the cost of $65 per person.”

Analyzing hypothetical Headley for Upton trade – The Friarhood

“To me, while an interesting topic of discussion, trading Headley for Upton makes little sense for San Diego. At this point Headley is a marginally better player at a tougher position to fill and should be more affordable for the next few seasons.”

A look at former Padre Jody Gerut’s transition from player to agent –

“But Gerut’s story is no longer about his own money. His focus these days, in his newly embraced role as a player agent for Wasserman Media Group, is on other people’s money.”

The week ahead in baseball –

“At 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson will reveal the results of the voting for Cooperstown’s 2013 class, and those findings will spark more passionate discourse from copy machine to coffee maker all over the country.”
