Daily Friar 10.8.12

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

A full fleged day of sports yesterday is just what the doctor ordered. Football mixed in with playoff baseball, does it get any better? Being that it was the weekend MLB was able to offer all their playof games in one day. It offered a couple good close games (one of which was a walkoff) and two blowouts (one of which included the giants). I know a lot of you are like me and hope that the Giants get knocked out this round, so that hopefully those Giant fans will shut up. Ah who am I kidding? San Francisco is stuck in 2010 and forever will be. My hope is that the Padres can win the World Series in the next couple years so that we can rub it in their face too. But we’ll be kind about it and after a year it’s over. Don’t want to be a-holes about it. Here are your links for today:

MLBTR has the Padres arbitration eligible players
“Assuming Moseley, Owings, and Stauffer are non-tendered and no one signs a multiyear extension, we’re estimating $27.4MM in salary for nine remaining arbitration eligible players.”

Steve Adler has his take on the MLBTR projections
“It should come as no surprise that Chase Headley, Luke Gregerson, and Clayton Richard are in line for big raises.”

Brouhaha over Padres ballpark in El Paso – Courthouse News
“The former mayor sued El Paso to try to stop it from demolishing City Hall to make way for a $50 million baseball stadium for the San Diego Padres’ Triple-A team.”

Petco Park among cleanest ballparks in America – Gaslamp Ball
“We came in at #29, outranked only by the Cardinals‘ Busch Stadium in St. Louis. In their rankings, Busch Stadium was the only park to get a grade of A. Petco Park got a B+ with its final score of 87.”

2012 report card: First Base – The Friarhood
“Alonso hit .270 or higher four of the six months and improved his average after the all-star break going from .263 to .285. Great indications that the 25-year old will be able to build on these numbers in 2013.”

Below are MLB.com’s recaps of all the playoff games from yesterday

Oakland A’s at Detroit Tigers
“Then, as the Tigers spilled out of their dugout to celebrate Sunday’s 5-4 walk-off win over the A’s in Game 2 of the American League Division Series, the 190-pound Kelly lifted 275-pound Prince Fielder off the ground, hugging him at first base.”

Nationals at Cardinals
“Moore worked a 2-2 count and dropped a two-run single into right field, pushing Washington to a 3-2 win in Game 1 of the National League Division Series at Busch Stadium.”

Yankess at Orioles
“New York’s 51st postseason appearance opened in winning fashion on Sunday, as Russell Martin’s go-ahead homer off closer Jim Johnson sparked a five-run ninth inning and helped the Yankees take Game 1 of the American League Division Series with a 7-2 victory at Camden Yards.”

Reds at Giants
“After all, they earned an emphatic 9-0 win over the Giants in Game 2 on Sunday night that included one-hit baseball from starter Bronson Arroyo over seven innings.”
