Daily Friar 12.15.12

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

While other teams are out there getting the man or men that they want to come to their team, the Padres are sitting back and watching things unfold. There wasn’t even so much as a whimper from the team minus the fact that they are looking for a couple of pieces. Now we are starting to hear some rumblings come from San Diego, and no I am not talking about the earthquake yesterday morning.

The Padres are showing interest in a couple of pitchers, one via free agency and one via trade. Edwin Jackson has been on the Padres radar of late as was reported yesterday, but he is a free agent and probably won’t come cheap. The pitching market has been very expensive this season and the new ownership will probably balk at a high asking price (even though they claim to have money). The other drawing interest is Rick Porcello of the Detroit Tigers. This one we would get via trade for not an extreme amount in my book. The articles below will detail all that is going on with that and more:

Pricey pitching market affecting Padres’ strategy – Padres.com

“San Diego general manager Josh Byrnes said Thursday that the team hasn’t entirely ruled out pursuing another free-agent pitcher — the team signed Jason Marquis earlier this month — but matching deals in terms and length is a sizeable hurdle.”

Padres making little noise during offseason – Jay Paris of the Union Tribune

“OK, so it’s not a December to remember if bleeding brown, yellow, blue, white – whatever hue is among the Padres’ numerous jerseys. If you’re a Padres fan, and yes, I get your e-mails, December is colored black, like a lump of coal.”

Rick Porcello drawing interest from Padres and Pirates – Mlive.com

“With Sanchez’s arrival, the Tigers have now filled four of the club’s five rotation spots, essentially leaving Porcello and left-hander Drew Smyly to fend for the final vacancy.”

Ben Nicholson-Smith of mlbtraderumors.com believes the largest needs for the Tigers are a lefty reliever and a right-handed corner outfielder.”

Here is more on pitcher Chris Rearick, who the Padres got from the Rays yesterday – Rays Colored Glasses

“His best pitch is his low-80′s slider with sharp, tight break, that he can throw to both lefties and righties, but the issue with Rearick moving forward is that it’s most effective when he can establish his fastball, and it’s questionable whether he’ll be able to do that moving forward.”

Fangraphs compares Peter Bourjos to Cameron Maybin

Maybin’s got a slightly higher OBP, but Bourjos has a slightly higher slugging percentage, and even after you account for the park factors, Bourjos grades out as a slightly better hitter overall.”

Phillies reach an agreement with Mike Adams – MLB.com

“MLB.com confirmed the Phillies have agreed to a two-year, $12 million contract with right-hander Mike Adams.”

Yankees designate Josh Spence for assignment – MLBTR

“The Yankees announced that they designated left-hander Josh Spence for assignment. The move creates 40-man roster space for recently-signed infielder Kevin Youkilis.”
