Daily Friar 2.12.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

It’s finally here! At least for the Padres anyway the day has finally arrived! Yesterday most clubs had their pitchers and catchers report for spring training. Today is the Padres’ report day thus officially kicking off the 2013 season! According to Corey Brock (via twitter) all the pitchers are there, except for Jose De Paula but he is on his way. He had some visa issues last season, but that is not expected to happen again this season. Also it appears that a lot of position players in attendance as well getting a jump start on spring. Today is mainly physical day as players will get checked out by team doctors to make sure they are staying healthy. Tomorrow I am sure the workouts will start. The best source for all the info and what is going on out in Peoria is Corey Brock. He is with the team now and will be updating every day. Most of the articles below are geared towards the start of spring training, so enjoy!

“We’re going to know right away, because the obvious key to the Padres season is on the mound and 60 feet, 6 inches away, behind the plate. If Hundley can’t rebound and the rotation can’t hang on early, this season could be longer than Yao Ming’s inseam.”

Padres open camp expressing optimism – The Examiner

“To be sure, despite a rash of pitching injuries, the Padres finished strongly last year and have a core of young players who should get better.”

Things the Padres didn’t accomplish in the off-season – Gaslamp Ball

“And yet… People are still getting this wrong. People are still carrying over the negatives of past ownerships into this ownership group and believing all of the positives have gone off to Boston or Chicago or San Francisco.”

Chicken Friars gives their account of FanFest

“Here’s a look at some first hand pictures of the ballpark and Padres Fanfest 2013.  I’m getting pumped up about the upcoming season.”

Cleveland Indians sign Michael Bourn – MLB.com

“According to multiple sources, the sides agreed on a four-year contract worth $48 million, pending the completion of a physical.”

Mat Latos and the Reds avoid arbitration and agree on two year deal – MLBTR

“Latos’ deal is worth $11.5MM over two years, according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.”
