Daily Friar 2.13.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Day two of spring training is upon us, which means pitchers and catchers will start working out and playing some catch. The position players that are already there are also probably taking some swings and getting loose. Occasionally we’ll get updates from the team on how players are progressing and what looks good and what doesn’t. Yesterday we didn’t get much as players were arriving and getting acclimated with the settings again. Yasmani Grandal was one of the faces present yesterday as he is working out with the club. He can train and workout, but he cannot play in any Major League game during the spring. So if you are going out to Peoria in the next couple of weeks and want to see him play you will have to go to the minor league fields. He is going to have a rough few weeks I am sure, but I think he will come out of it okay. There is a lot to get to today, including two from the UT, so here are your links:

Only Clayton Richard and Edinson Volquez have secure spots in the rotation –

“As it stands now, a total of 36 pitchers are in camp and most of them will throw Wednesday, which is the first official workout for pitchers and catchers. When Minor Leaguer Jose De Paula reports on Thursday, there will be 37.”

Dave Roberts is cancer free – Union Tribune

“That his task was being a Padres coach was not only rewarding, but it likely stiff-armed his cancer.”

Padres hope pitching injuries of 2012 were an anomaly – Union Tribune

“The Padres pitching coach of nine seasons wasn’t upset with the runs, home runs and walks allowed by his starting pitchers last season. He was alarmed by the number of injuries suffered by his charges.”

Padres have a lot of pitchers for long spring – CBS Sports

“The volume will help the Padres navigate a spring training extended by the World Baseball Classic, which features a franchise-record 38 games. It allows manager Bud Black to keep his veterans out of the early exhibitions. And, perhaps most importantly, it gives the Padres a deep well to fill a shallow starting rotation.”

Padres outfield depth chart discussion – Fangraphs

“But the Padres have some young men on the horizon that might fight their way to the fore, and as is usually the case with their team, they have some under-valued assets that could fit on your fantasy team… if in a part-time role.”

Spring Training position battles: Starting Pitching – Chicken Friars

“My guess is Portillo won’t crack the rotation until he’s absolutely needed because of injury. Donn Roach is a sleeper pick.”

Felix Hernandez and the Mariners complete his contract extension –

“Zduriencik said details of the contract would be announced at the press conference (to be streamed live on, but a source confirmed to that the basic agreement is for seven years and $175 million, with some new language written in that would protect the Mariners if Hernandez misses a season with elbow problems.”

Indians sign Daisuke Matsuzaka – MLBTR

“The Indians announced that they have officially signed Daisuke Matsuzaka to a minor league contract with a Spring Training invitation.”
