Daily Friar 2.15.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

I hope that everyone had a good Valentine’s Day yesterday spending time with their significant other or with whomever they were with. I spent the first part of my day sitting in jury duty (hence no Daily Friar yesterday), but I am back today to fill you in on what is going on around camp. Now that things are actually happening, everybody has something to write about. Obviously right now the best news source is Corey Brock as he is the only reporter that is with the team as we speak. So his twitter account and his articles on are the go to for all the information. There are a ton of new articles on to read, but I have only selected one to post on here. I figure if you are reading this then you probably have already read, or are going to read stuff on anyway. So let’s get to those articles and see what the news brings us today:

Elbow injury sidelines Rymer Liriano –

“Outfielder Rymer Liriano, regarded as the No. 3 prospect in the Padres’ organization by, and No. 55 overall, will have reconstructive surgery on his right elbow and will miss the 2013 season.”

Gyorko bids to become Padres second baseman – Union Tribune

“I knew what it meant,” said Gyorko. “I took it as a compliment. They had Chase Headley at third and two other guys (Logan Forsythe and James Darnell) who could play third. I was excited when they asked me to switch.”

Yasmani Grandal plans apology for Saturday – CBS Sports

“He plans to talk to his teammates when the entire Padres squad gathers Saturday, and will meet with the media later that day.”

Andrew Cashner confident he will be ready for opening day – NBC Sports

“Andrew Cashner hopes to be ready for Opening Day, even though he won’t begin throwing bullpen sessions until around March 1.”

Chase Headley says Bud Black is “such a good manager” – Sports Radio Interviews

I think before it’s all said and done we are going to have a really good team because he’s such a good manager.

Minor League Profile: Jose De Paula – Gaslamp Ball

“If his career pattern to date is to be trusted, one could expect him to spend this season with AA San Antonio, although his sabbatical from organized ball and possible role change could see him return to some sort of A-ball.”

Minor League pitchers offer most intrigue this spring – Chicken Friars

“Nevertheless, it is at least intriguing and hopeful to see that the Friars do have some potential in their Minor League system after so many years with their “cupboards” essentially “bare” of talent.”

2013 Spring Training Preview – Cheri Bell of The Friarhood

“The Padres have an unprecedented number of players in spring training this year. Understandable considering the injury issues that last season forced the GM to go outside the organization to troll for anything with two arms and two legs to fill out the roster.”
