Daily Friar 2.4.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Good morning everyone! Everybody doing alright after yesterday? Anybody nursing a bad hangover? The Super Bowl has come and gone and with it we have the Baltimore Ravens as your new champions. It was a very good game, although it looked to be a runaway early. The 49ers looked to have a chance to at least tie the game up late, but it wasn’t meant to be. Once the clock hit zero, the Ravens were hoisting the Lombardi trophy as their own. And with that we tip our hat to football and turn our attention to baseball. The sun is shining as we enter the first full week of February (or Februany as celebrity endorsers would lead you to believe) and that means spring training is on its way. Buses and trailers full of gear are already making their way to Arizona and Florida and that means that pitchers and catchers will report very soon. In the mean time we can only be patient and wait for the time to come. We have FanFest coming up this weekend, which promises to be a fun time. If you have gone the previous years you know what is in store. This year the Friarhood is working on some fun activities for you all, so stay tuned. Alright enough rambling, let’s get to those articles:

Baseball Prospectus looks at what the hearing could have been like for Chase Headley

“In Part One of this 10-part series, we’ll tackle San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley, who (unbeknownst to our arbitrators) settled with San Diego for $8.575 million last week.”

Everth Cabrera and his speed potential – Rant Sports

“Last season, Cabrera didn’t just show that his speed could be an asset – he showed that it could be elite. There were only two players who stole more bases last season than Cabrera’s 44 in 2012 – Trout and Rajai Davis – but Cabrera’s 91.7 percent success rate easily trumps that of Davis’, and edges out Trout’s.”

Cody Decker is going to try catching during spring training this year – Corey Brock via Twitter

The Hot Stove on will be talking Padres today – Tim McMaster via twitter

The countdown to Spring Training is on –

“The first pitchers and catchers will begin arriving at their camps in Arizona and Florida next Monday. Position players will begin reporting four days later, on Feb. 15.”

Indians sign Jeremy Hermida – CBS Sports

“The Indians have signed outfielder Jeremy Hermida to a minor-league deal, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.”
