Daily Friar 2.8.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

There is a lot to get to today. As we are approaching the start of Spring Training and with FanFest tomorrow, a lot of things are taking shape with the club. Also I have a ton of links to some great Friarhood events and contests down at the very bottom of this piece. Let me start off with a little baseball news as the Seattle Mariners appear to be on the verge of a large contract with Felix Hernandez. The contract would be for 7 years at 175 million dollars, making King Felix the highest paid pitcher in all of baseball. This was rumored all day yesterday, but there has been no official word from the club yet so I am waiting on that to post a link. As far as the Padres go, the team is very optimistic right now with the direction they are taking as you will see in some of the articles:

Padres enter seeking health from familiar squad – Padres.com

“But Black is optimistic the offense — long an area of concern — will be better in 2013 than it has been in any of his previous seasons.”

Yonder Alonso envisions big things for the Padres – MLB.com

“Still, Alonso believes the team will compete, and that it hasn’t lost its momentum from the second half of last season. In 2012, San Diego dropped five games to the Dodgers by one run and six to the Giants by two runs or fewer.”

A guide for those going to Spring Training for the first time – Union Tribune

“Spring training offers a far more intimate setting than the regular season. Fans can view practices and batting practice in close proximity to the players and the fields.”

Fangraphs has their top 15 prospects for the Padres

“San Diego has an impressive system with both some high-ceiling talent and depth. The organization has had some impressive drafts recently, and a number of trades have brought in exciting talent.”

Meet the new FSSD on-air talent – Fox Sports San Diego

“FOX Sports San Diego (FSSD) today welcomed Laura McKeeman, Kelly Crull and Megan Olivi to their distinguished team of broadcast talent. The trio comes to San Diego each with a unique background within the FOX family and joins FSSD’s returning veterans for this season’s Padres telecasts.”

Joe Wieland and Cory Luebke rehab and live together – Gaslamp Ball

“Since then Wieland and Luebke became roommates and are living in Luebke’s house in La Jolla.”

Padres winter league recap – Alex Bartlett of The Friarhood

“Padres utility men, Alexi Amarista and Jesus Guzman, both played winter ball down in Venezuela. Though it was a smaller sample size, Jesus Guzman proved to be very productive during his time in the VWL; had he collected enough AB’s to qualify, Guzman would have ranked 17th in terms of average.”

Friarhood scavenger hunt details

“If you are attending Padres Fanfest this weekend you are in for a ton of fun, but it doesn’t stop there.  We at Friarhood wanted to have a little fun ourselves, so we set up a Friarhood Scavenger Hunt!”

Friarhood events for this season

“If you haven’t joined us at a game, the goal is simple.  To sit around other Padres fans and have a good time.”
