Daily Friar 3.17.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone! I hope that all of you are having a safe weekend with whatever you have planned. I am still here in Peoria having a great time taking in some baseball and making me ever ready for opening day. Yesterday I was at the game against the Diamondbacks and was very impressed with what I saw. Tyson Ross was outstanding on the hill allowing very little offense to the snakes. Whenever he gave up a hit or a walk, Ross was able to pitch around the issue and get out of the inning. In fact he only gave up one hit in his 5 1/3 innings of work. He did give up three walks however, which were a little concerning, but he didn’t allow them to score. The runs started coming late in the game as Brandon Kloess had a rough outing giving up four runs. If you look at the final score you would think it was a close one throughout. However, this wasn’t the case as the game wound up being 10-1 up until the 9th inning. One thing to note was Kyle Gaedele’s grand slam. This was no ordinary grand slam as it was a monster shot off the bat, the only thing standing in his way was the huge center field wall that he needed to clear, and he did by probably 10 feet; it was impressive. It was great seeing some Friarhood fans yesterday as well, always nice seeing members of the congregation outside of Petco Park. How about we get to some articles? Enjoy your Sunday!

Ross picks up win, keeps up shut out streak – Padres.com

“Tyson Ross bolstered his chances of winning a job in the starting rotation by tossing 5 1/3 scoreless innings on Saturday in the Padres’ 10-6 victory over the D-backs at the Peoria Sports Complex.”

Padres reassign four to minor league camp – NBC Sports

“Padres reassigned LHP Robbie Erlin, and RHPs Kevin Quackenbush, Matt Stites and Jason Ray to minor league camp.”

Positional Power Rankings: 3B – Fangraphs
Padres come in at number 10

“Forsythe has shown in his short time in the majors to be a lefty killer. Headley hits lefties just fine too, but if he needs a day off here and there, it should come against lefties in order to maximize value for both players.”

Minor League Camp Report: March 16 – MadFriars

“Jaff Decker joined the minor leaguers for the first time after his stay in big league camp. He shot a double down the left field line in his first at-bat, then turned on a pitch for a double to right the next time around. Conversation behind the backstop was that it was nice to see him being aggressive.”

Carlos Quentin should take time getting healthy – Rant Sports

“I think the chances of him getting the knee in bad trouble again increase greatly if they don’t reexamine the idea that he will certainly be ready by the first of April. It’s possible the knee isn’t healthy enough to go.”
