Daily Friar 3.21.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

We are inching ever closer to the start of the regular season! In fact one week from today will be the final game in Arizona. Then the team will head to San Antonio for a two game stint against the Rangers before a day off on the 31st. This will be the travel day to New York as they prepare for Opening Day against the Mets on April 1st. Andrew Cashner feels that he will be ready by then as he pitched yesterday and put up some good numbers. The only concern right now, in my eyes, is that he had a late start to the spring and isn’t exactly where the other pitchers are at this point. Where most guys are in the five to six inning area now, Cashner was only in there for 2 2/3 innings. He did give up one run, but he also struck out four in that time. Of more concern is Tim Stauffer had another awful outing. He took the loss as he gave up three runs on five hits in only three innings of work. Luke Gregerson and Huston Street both got an inning in and they were flawless. The team has a day off today, but it will be interesting to see what happens with a week to go before they break camp. Cashner aids rotation case in Padres’ loss –

“Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford had three hits and drove in a run on Wednesday as the Giants topped the Padres, 6-4, in a Cactus League game at the Peoria Sports Complex.”

Carlos Quentin’s return goes really well – NBC Sports

“But I played without pain, which was great. There’s a lot of optimism … today [the knee] bounced back better than it had after the first two games.”

A look at team finances – Fangraphs

“The Padres have hovered in the 2.1 million attendance range for the last few seasons. That’s respectable in a city the size of San Diego, but it’s certainly not enough to inspire the new owners to spend more, at least in the short term.”

The latest on Rick Porcello – MLBTR

“The Padres declined to take Porcello for Huston Street or Luke Gregerson, a Tigers source told Bowden.”

A look at Padres streaks through the years – Gaslamp Ball

“That’s how you get to the World Series apparently, with the shortest losing streak and the longest winning streak.”

A look at Corey Adamson – Chicken Friars

“Last week, we brought you team Canada’s Mark Hardy for a look at his experience at the World Baseball Classic. This week, 21 year old Corey Adamson shares his experience playing for team Australia.”

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Padres Galaxy – GhostofRAK on Padres Public

“In fact, has anyone ever looked into whether or not the person in charge of promotions is a Hitchhiker’s Guide fan? That would explain so much.”
