Daily Friar 3.24.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Hope you all are enjoying March Madness (if you are watching and into it). For those that are just sitting idly by and waiting for baseball’s regular season to start, you are in luck! This is the final week of spring training as we are eight days away from April 1st! The 25 man roster is slowly starting to take shape as we find out who will start at what position, who will crack the rotation, who will wind up in the bullpen, who will wind up on the disabled list, who will be sent back to the minors, and who will ultimately be released? The Padres released a handful of minor league players yesterday (which will be noted below), and they also just announced that Freddy Garcia has been released as well. No shocker here though as he had an abysmal spring and pitched terribly again in his start yesterday. In other minor league news, Nate Freiman, who used to be Padres property, is now with the Oakland A’s. He was picked up by the Astros via the Rule V draft, but was claimed off waivers by the A’s. Some good articles to get to today, so let’s do this:

Nick Hundley and Kyle Blanks homer as Padres drop slugfest -

“Rockies catcher Wilin Rosario homered in his third straight game as Colorado beat the Padres, 10-4, Saturday night at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.”

Padres release Freddy Garcia –

“Garcia, 36, was in camp on a Minor League contract. He was 1-4 with an 8.71 ERA in six appearances over 20 2/3 innings for the Padres this spring. In his last start for San Diego, the right-hander allowed three home runs in five innings in Saturday’s loss to the Rockies.”

Carlos Quentin played the field yesterday – NBC Sports

“Carlos Quentin played the field for six innings Saturday in his return from arthroscopic knee surgery.”

2013 Padres Preview – Hardball Talk

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Padres get off to a slow start, as a rotation led by Edinson Volquez, Clayton Richard and Jason Marquis isn’t good enough to make up for a mediocre offense, but Bud Black’s squad certainly has the pieces to get better as the year goes along.”

Minor League Moves – MLBTR

“The Padres have released six minor-leaguers,’s Corey Brock Reports: pitchers Mark Pope, Chris Haney, and Michael Broadway; outfielders Anthony Renteria and Kyung-Min Na; and first baseman Goose Kallunki.”

Padres bitten by injury bug, but confident anyway – Rant Sports

“If everything falls in the right way, the Padres should be back to full strength by early May. Not to jinx them, but it appears they got a good deal with the injury bug in 2013.”

Minor League Camp Report: March 23 – MadFriars

“OF Dan Robertson has had an impressive career in his tenure with the Padres and today was no different. Robertson made several nice plays in center to go along with a home run and a double.”

2013 Padres Top Prospects – Steve Adler of The Friarhood

“We will kick things off today telling you who made a top 10 list, but is not in the cumulative top 10.”

Plethora of Padres injuries is troubling – Glen Miller of The Friarhood

“Usually I think injuries are a function of bad luck but after so many in the last couple of years I’m starting to question whether it’s that simple or if the Padres are at least partially to blame.”
