Daily Friar 3.25.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Good news as we head into the final week of spring training is that Yonder Alonso is showing his power stroke. He hit another home run in yesterday’s game as the Padres beat the Brewers. This now makes five home runs for him in the past nine games he has played in. Hopefully that will carry over into the start of the season, especially when the Padres head to Colorado after the New York series. In other news the rosters are starting to take shape. We noted that Freddy Garcia has been released yesterday and I am sure we’ll hear about more minor league releases and reassignments soon. Bud Black has announced his opening day starter and home opener starter as well. You’ll have to click into the second link below. In MLB news there was a big signing today as well as a big trade in the works. Vernon Wells is on his way to becoming a Yankee, and Kyle Lohse finally has a new team. Read about it all below:

Padres should use bullpen depth to acquire Rick Porcello – Chicken Friars

“At least to me, a “Porcello for Gregerson” or a “Porcello for Street” deal would benefit both the Tigers and the Padres, and I hope that the Padres’ brass are trying to exercise a trade to bring him to San Diego.”

Person of Interest: Nick Hundley – The Vocal Minority at Padres Public

“As another season gets started and most hope for the playoffs is already lost, for Padres fans, fans of redemption stories, and fans of the underdog, I suggest taking an interest in Nick Hundley to keep yourself entertained. Hopefully he won’t fall flat on his face.”

Padres lineup vs Rangers – Corey Brock via Twitter

Brewers to sign Kyle Lohse – MLBTR

“Lohse will receive a three-year, $33MM contract, tweets Bob Nightengale of USA Today, and ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick notes a possible $1MM in performance bonuses.”
