Daily Friar 3.27.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Padres took on the Giants yesterday and they had a decent outing even though they took the loss. Andrew Cashner got the start as he went into the fifth inning allowing two runs on three hits. He did walk two also, but countered with four strike outs. I mentioned it before, but as we get closer to the start of the season the roster is starting to take shape. We still don’t know who will be the fifth starter, but we do know some other moves that have happened. As you will see in one of the articles below, Logan Forsythe will most likely start on the disabled list due to his foot problem. With Chase Headley already hurt, this will open the door for Cody Ransom to make the Opening Day roster. The NBC Sports article below will highlight some of the minor league moves made today as well. One that isn’t mentioned though is the release of Eric Hamren. Hamren had a brief stint with the Padres in 2011, but pitched exclusively in AAA Tuscon last year. It won’t be long before he is picked up elsewhere though. Alright lots to get to today so let’s get to it:

Jason Marquis continues to make unlikely comeback – Rant Sports

“Marquis is expected to be the third starter in the rotation this year and although it is only spring training, his work so far this Spring has been very encouraging for the Padres who will be in need of solid starting pitching performances in 2013 in order to win consistently.”

Edinson Volquez and the Quest For Control – Padres Public

“To that end, perhaps the only control the Padres can hope for out of Edinson Volquez isn’t in how he attacks the strike zone, but in how they can maximize output through efficiently managing his match-ups.”

Logan Forsythe likely to start season on DL – Brandon Cline of The Friarhood

“Logan only played eight games this spring training batting .270/.343/.390 before he developed his plantar fasciitis on March 9th.”

Three For The Show: Relief Pitching – Chris Kelly of the Friarhood

“In the immortal words of Huey Lewis: This is it! The tenth and final piece in the series is here. Whew! I have concluded my identification of the top three players at each position in the Padres’ minor league system. Up last: Relief Pitching.”
