Daily Friar 3.30.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

This is it Padre fans, the final tune up before the regular season begins. The Padres are in San Antonio right now playing in the very small Alamodome where a fly ball is a home run. I didn’t get a chance to touch on this before but the right field fence is only 285 feet down the line. Also the park has a straight right field fence like at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, which also makes it play even smaller. Yesterday the team played the Rangers and lost, and today they will be taking on the Houston Astros. Then after this game it is on to New York with the off day tomorrow before Opening Day on Monday. The rosters are all set and you can read about all that below:

Venable, Gyorko go deep early in loss at Alamodome – Padres.com

“Will Venable, Jedd Gyorko and Jonathan Galvez reached the Alamodome seats, but the Rangers scored big in the middle innings, edging the Padres, 5-4, in front of a largely partisan Rangers crowd.”

Padres option Tommy Layne and Kyle Blanks to round out roster – Padres.com

“Black also confirmed that right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross will be the No. 5 starter in the rotation and will pitch on April 6 in Colorado.”

Jedd Gyorko will rotate between second and third – NBC Sports

“Gyorko will get the call at third base against all right-handed pitching while Alexi Amarista will play second. However, against left-handed pitching, Gyorko will start at second base while Cody Ransom will play the hot corner.”

Cameron Maybin is a breakout candidate – Rant Sports

“The Padres will be counting on Maybin to start the 2013 season the way he finished 2012. With his natural athletic talent and his ability to patrol Petco Park’s spacious center field, many feel Maybin is only beginning to scratch the surface on his immense potential.”

2013 Predictions – Fangraphs

“Yes, predictions are basically worthless, even ours. Yes, they’re still kind of fun, and provide a useful reminder of what we all thought was true before the season started. So, here’s the FanGraphs Staff predicting 2013.”

Yonder Alonso is going to have to supply the power – Chicken Friars

“One player who will likely have to step up and supply some power in the absences of Headley and Grandal is first baseman Yonder Alonso.”

Geoff Young analyzes the Padres bullpen – Padres Public

“Even still, the bullpen wasn’t bad in 2012. It only seems that way because the 2010 and 2011 versions were outstanding. If you want to see a bad bullpen (and who doesn’t), check out 2008.”

Padres projected 25 man roster – The Friarhood

“Spring Training is coming to a close and the Padres are making the final tweaks to the roster.  At this point guessing is at a minimum, but this is my best guess at the projected 25-man roster on opening day, April 1st.”

Giants extend Buster Posey – MLB.com

“He and the Giants agreed to terms on the most lucrative contract in franchise history on Friday, an eight-year, $167 million extension.”

Tigers extend Justin Verlander – MLBTR

“His five-year, $140MM extension with the Tigers has a $28MM average annual value and will keep him in Detroit through the 2019 season.  The deal also includes a vesting option for 2020 worth $22MM.”
