Daily Friar 3.4.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Yesterday was the first game of spring to be televised on Fox Sports San Diego this season. Today will be the second game televised against the Rangers. Yesterday the Padres beat the White Sox in what I would say was a very well played game by the squad. Great pitching performances as well as excellent hitting from most of the guys. The interesting thing to note from the game was the starting pitching match up. Jake Peavy went head to head with Clayton Richard. If you can all think back a few years ago when Jake Peavy was traded to the White Sox, Clayton Richard was one of the names that came over to San Diego. It’s always fun to watch when that happens (even in spring) just to see which club gets the better of the other. As it stood yesterday the Padres came out on top. As I mentioned, the game is on TV today as well starting at 12:05 with Eric Stults getting the nod to start the game. Here are your links for today:

Extra-base hits back Clayton Richard in Cactus League debut – Padres.com

“Cameron Maybin and Nick Hundley each had run-scoring doubles Sunday, and projected Opening Day starter Clayton Richard tossed two scoreless innings as the Padres topped the White Sox, 4-0, at the Peoria Sports Complex.”

Kotsay’s value as Padres’ wiseman – Union Tribune

“There just might not be enough to say about Kotsay simply being there — at the locker right by the hallway every player passes several times a day, in the dugout, in the dining room, on the plane.”

James Darnell still not cleared for games – NBC Sports

“There’s no timetable for when Darnell will be cleared to return. While the injury isn’t believed to be serious, he’ll need to prove he’s healthy if he has any chance to win a bench spot in spring training.”

Padres are expecting a lot from Huston Street – Rant Sports

“Now that the Padres have Street under a cheap contract for a couple years, it has to be comforting knowing they have a stopper at the end of the bullpen.”

Will the frugal Padres resign Edinson Volquez if he does well this year? – Chicken Friars

“Let’s just hope that Edinson can be an even more productive Pitcher this year to warrant a future discussion on a contract extension for him to stay in town.”

Five Ridiculously Pessimistic Predictions For 2013 – Glen Miller of The Friarhood

“I don’t know; maybe these aren’t as ridiculously pessimistic as I think. I am a Padres fan and have been used to disappointment for the better part of 30 years. Hopefully none of the above proves true but would it really surprise any of us if they did?”
