Daily Friar 3.5.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

The Padres played a pretty decent game yesterday against the Rangers. All things considered they held their own against a Rangers lineup that featured their top bats. The game was lost in the bottom of the ninth on a walk off hit into right field. Again it’s spring where nothing matters except personal performance, so it was nice to see a great game from two players specifically. Eric Stults pitched well, and is solidifying his spot in the rotation. Kyle Blanks also had a great game at the plate which you can read all about in the articles below:

Increasing frustration from players could lead to harsher PED penalties – CBS Sports

“Cuddyer was echoing the same thing the Cardinals’ Matt Holliday said over the winter. One-hundred games. Make it hurt. And surely, if these guys are starting to go public with their growing disgust, there’s more where they come from.”

Obscure facts about the Padres – Union Tribune

“Most Padres fans know that their team is the only one in the major leagues to have never hit for the cycle nor pitched a no-hitter. We decided to dig for some more obscure facts and numbers about the Padres…”

Andrew Cashner is nearing spring debut – NBC Sports

“Andrew Cashner (thumb) could make his Cactus League debut as soon as next week.”

Top 20 for 2013 – MadFriars

“The strength of the system is clearly pitching. Hurlers represent nearly three-quarters of the list below. Keep a particular eye on the rotations in Low-A Fort Wayne, which could have four top-flight starters this season, and in Double-A San Antonio.”

City Council hearing is in place to figure out TWC – Gaslamp Ball

“Either way, what with Mayor Bob Filner actually voicing an opinion on things and this city council hearing at least we’re getting somewhere… I think.”

Austin Hedges considered best defensive catcher in the minors – Chicken Friars

“The Padres’ catcher of the future knows he is the best defensive catching prospect in the Minor Leagues, but admits he still needs to improve behind the plate.”

Three for the Show: Center Fielders – Chris Kelly of The Friarhood

“This is the seventh (getting there) in a ten-part series where I will identify the top three players at each position in the Padres’ minor league system. Up next: Center Field.”
