Daily Friar 4.1.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

No this is not an April Fools joke, baseball is finally back today! In fact by the time this gets posted the Padres will have already started their 2013 season. Last night was actually opening night as the Astros defeated the Rangers in Houston. Everybody starts fresh today and while experts think they can predict the outcome of the season, there will always be surprises. Let’s hope that the Padres can be one of those surprises and make things interesting as we head into August and September. I’m going to keep things short and sweet today as I have the game on the TV sitting next to me. I hope that you are somewhere where you too can enjoy the game to some capacity. Happy Opening Day everyone and GO PADRES!

Jedd Gyorko has cheering section in MLB debut –

“There figured to be more than just a sliver of Padres fans watching the season-opener at Citi Field on Monday. The loudest figured to be friends and family of rookie second baseman Jedd Gyorko, who slotted fifth in his big league debut.”

Mark Kotsay still optimistic about Padres – Union Tribune

“But I think it is there. I think as a team we understand what we have to do. We need 2½ to three hours of full concentration from everyone, every night.”

Another preview of the season –

“If you talk to people around the Padres, there’s a feeling that this team could be a sleeper. The Pads finished 47-35 after a horrendous start in 2012, and kept the team essentially intact over the winter.”

A preview of the Padres and Mets series – Gaslamp Ball

“Baseball is back and that means it’s time for us to preview the Mets’ opening series with the San Diego Padres. Bud Black’s team finished last season in fourth place in the National League West with a 76-86 record.”

Scouting the Opponent: New York Mets – Chicken Friars

“We call this segment Scouting The Opponent because we are asking the questions to get to know the opposition. For our first Scouting The Opponent segment, we interviewed Rising Apple Editor Matt Musico.”

Andy Masur shares his Opening Day thoughts – Padres Public

“So as the new season approaches, sleep well, if you can. You’ll need your strength for the 162 game marathon we all love so much.”

Top 10 storylines I’m rooting for in 2013 – Steve Adler of The Friarhood

“The 2013 season is upon us and as our Padres prepare to take the field against the Mets I decided to look at 2013 with my rose colored glasses on and pinpoint some storylines I am optimistically looking forward to this year.”

Fans have mixed reactions as Opening Day nears – Steve Adler of The Friarhood

“The combination of a 4th place finish and a very quiet off-season has left Padres fans divided.  As the founder of this website, it is frustrating that the fan base is so down on the season, but I can’t blame them.”
