Daily Friar 5.23.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Tyler Lyons was making his first major league start last night against Burch Smith who was making his third. At the end of the game one would come out victorious and look like he had been pitching for years, while the other has earned himself a trip back to the minor leagues. It seemed like it would be an easy win for the Padres having to face a rookie pitcher, especially since the offense has been doing pretty good of late. However, that was not to be the case as Tyler Lyons shut down the offense to the tune of four hits through seven innings. The only run came on a mammoth home run by Jedd Gyorko in the seventh inning. The Padres would later plate two more in the bottom of the ninth only teasing a comeback before ultimately dropping the game 5-3. Burch Smith lasted one inning once again, giving up four runs on five hits before being pulled in the second. Tim stauffer came in to relieve him and lasted 5.2 innings and was phenomenal. If we didn’t have that first inning we may have won that game. So as I said, and as the articles will show below, Burch Smith was sent down. He was called up from AA and sent down to AAA so there is that going for him. He has good stuff, but he worked too much around the plate and wasn’t fooling anyone. We’ll see him again soon and I know he will be better.
