Daily Friar 5.8.12

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

The Padres avoided a 4 game losing streak last night. The pitching stepped it up last night, and the offense got just enough done to beat the Rockies. They’re only 3 games ahead of us, so if by some miracle we can pull out a sweep then we can possibly be a game behind them when it’s all said and done. So close to getting out of the cellar! Here’s hoping the Padres can beat them again tonight and get a winning streak going. Here are your Padres link for today:

Volquez, bullpen help Padres handcuff Rox – Padres.com
“Volquez got his first victory on Monday, thanks in large part to the contributions of the Padres’ bullpen, as San Diego snapped a three-game losing skid with a 3-2 victory over the Rockies in front of a crowd of 15,895 at Petco Park.”

Quentin’s return close, possibly this weekend – Union Tribune
“He is expected to be with the Padres on Thursday when they fly east for three games in Philadelphia and two in Washington.”

Alonso lives up to his billing – NCT
“Alonso went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs and has now hit safely in 10 of 11 games.”

O’Malley’s bid for Padres is good for baseball – The Republic (Columbus, Indiana)
“But his name, and all that it has stood for throughout his baseball life, would force Southern California to hold the Padres in significantly higher esteem.”

Padres hope to expedite promotion of Gyorko – West Virginia Illustrated
“So while Gyorko could eventually be moved back to third base (depending on how Spangenberg develops), the Padres front office seems to be focused on the present and getting Gyorko’s bat to the Majors in any way possible.
