Daily Friar 6.11.13

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

That finish was a little close for comfort for the Padres. We knew going into this series that the Braves are a good hitting team and I for one was a little worried at how well our pitchers would be able to handle them. Jason Marquis did exceptionally well stymieing the Braves bats for nearly 8 innings. He did walk quite a few as he gave up five free passes, but he was able to pitch out of jams and limit the Braves to only two runs. Then the bullpen came in and that is when the wheels fell off. Tim Stauffer had a tough time getting anyone out as he allowed a three run homer to Evan Gattis before being pulled for Dale Thayer. Thayer then gave up a home run to Jason Heyward before finally closing out the game as the Padres finally grabbed the win. Logan Forsythe had a monster game back in a Padre uniform as he went 2-2 with a walk and home run. If he keeps this up the Padres are going to have some decision making to do when it comes to both Forsythe and Blanks once Gyorko and Alonso come back.

Forsythe homers in season debut to back Marquis –

“The Braves homered twice in the ninth inning, and brought the tying run to the plate, before the Padres finally held on for a 7-6 win on Monday in front of 21,192 fans at Petco Park.”

A preview of today’s game – ESPN

“There is reason for optimism Tuesday since Hudson (4-5, 4.48 ERA) has posted a 2.70 ERA in 12 appearances against the Padres, with his teams winning eight of his 11 starts. San Diego, Atlanta and Houston are the only teams he has never lost to.”

An inside look at draft preparation –

“Major League Baseball’s Draft might lack the sex appeal of its other professional sports brethren, but don’t try telling these guys — the area scouts, the cross-checkers, scouting director (Gasparino), vice president, assistant general manager of player personnel Chad MacDonald and many others.”

Padres designate John Baker – MLBTR

“Baker, 32, played in 16 games for the Padres this season, hitting .150/.261/.150 in 46 plate appearances. Over parts of six Major League seasons with the Marlins (2008-11) and Padres (2012-13), Baker has hit .258/.342/.364.”

Padres’ depth getting put to the test – Union Tribune

“Days later, both first baseman Yonder Alonso and rookie second baseman Jedd Gyorko are on the disabled list, the latter joining the former on the 15-day DL with a strained groin sustained over the weekend in a slide at Coors Field.”

Huston Street set to begin rehab assignment – NBC Sports

“Wednesday’s appearance could be the only one Street needs before being activated if all goes well, possibly putting him in line for activation on Friday, the first day he’s eligible.”

The Padres surprising middle infield – Fangraphs

“When a team like the Padres puts together a good middle infield combo seemingly overnight, it’s definitely worthy of mention. In shortstop Everth Cabrera and second baseman Jedd Gyorko, San Diego may have one of the game’s most surprisingly effective middle infield duos.”

Padres announce additions to 2013 promotional schedule – Scoop San Diego

“The San Diego Padres today announced additions to the club’s 2013 promotional lineup, including seven new weekend giveaways, Taco Tuesdays and KidsFest at the Park every Sunday. The summer fun at Petco Park heats up beginning in July.”

An interview with Chad MacDonald – MadFriars

“We talked with the guy who heads up the Padres’ draft to get his thoughts on the 40 players the club tabbed in the 2013 draft.”

Recently the Traveling Jersey went to Seattle – Gaslamp Ball

“The Padres were facing off against the hated Mariners, and I wanted to take the Traveling Jersey to see it. I flew in Saturday morning, and after catching up with an old friend over some excellent sushi, I was off to see the sights.”

The Following are pieces from The Friarhood writers:

Jedd Gyorko is on the DL – Ian Edward Russell Smith

“The Padres made a handful of roster moves today as it was announced that Rookie Infielder Jedd Gyorko will be headed to the 15-day Disabled List after sustaining a groin injury during Sunday’s 10-inning loss to the Rockies, according to Padres announcer Bob Scanlan.”

Five good things from the Rockies’ series – Jeremy Nash

“The nice thing about a long series is that it is very easy for me to find some positives. And this particular series was chock-full of them. The Padres could’ve easily won every game of the series but ended taking two of the four.”

A recap of the Tuscon Padres week #9 – Mylo Erickson

“The Tucson Padres finished off its ninth week of play going 3-3 combined against the Reno Aces and the Sacramento River Cats.”

Blanks deserves to remain in San Diego – Glen Miller

“What’s the impediment? Who is blocking Blanks preventing him from getting two or three starts a week? Jesus Guzman? I don’t think so.”
