Daily Friar 7.22.12

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

As the game went on last night one couldn’t help but be reminded of the 22 inning affair that took place a couple years ago. The Padres and Rockies were battling it out all night in what was a pretty good game all around. The only bad thing about it was Kip Wells and his 4th inning, and the fact that it took us 12 innings to just lose the game. As a Padres fan it was disheartening, but as a baseball fan it was a good game. Expecially at the end when Tyler Colvin and Will Venable traded diving catches in right field to extend the game. So as it stands the series is tied, which again means it’s rubber match Sunday. Here are your Padres links for today:

After late rally, Padres fall in extras vs. Rockies – Padres.com
“Black could have just as easily been describing the arc of his team’s 8-6, 12-inning loss to the Rockies in front of 37,174 fans on Saturday night. It was a back-and-forth battle that saw his Padres grab and then concede an early lead, tie things up late and ultimately fall victim to two Rockies runs in the top of the 12th.”

Padres system ripe with closer candidates – Union Tribune
“Keeping in step with the history of the franchise, several of the hotter young pitching prospects in the minor leagues right now are closers.”

Stauffer making steady progress – NCT
“Tim Stauffer’s rehab reached a mini milestone before Saturday’s game with the Rockies, when he played long toss and threw hard from 60 feet off flat ground.”

Padres, Carlos Quentin nearing extension – MLBTR
“The deal is believed to be for about $27MM over three years and with a very reachable bonus that could boost the total to $30MM.
