Daily Friar 8.23.13

The Padres had the day off yesterday as they took time to recover from a pretty quiet series for them offensively. Yes they won on Wednesday, but only by a score of 2-1. The previous two nights they were only able to muster up one run each game. Now the Cubs roll into town and hopefully the Padres can score some runs against them. Today we get to see which Edinson Volquez shows up as he takes on Edwin Jackson at 7:10 PST.

Simple approach working for Venable –

“Since the All-Star break, Venable has been one of the National League’s best hitters, posting a .348 batting average. His 12 extra-base hits in August are tied for the second most in the NL entering play Thursday.”

A preview of today’s game – ESPN

“Edinson Volquez hopes to remain undefeated against Chicago and help the Padres to a fifth straight home victory over the lowly Cubs on Friday night.”

Padres outright O’Sullivan – MLBTR

“Padres right-hander Sean O’Sullivan has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A Tucson, according to the Pacific Coast League transactions page.”

Daily Farm Report: August 23 – MadFriars

“Pete Kelich struck out a career high 12 as he continued his dominance over the Arizona Fall League”

Pitching for next year: Tyson Ross – Padres Public

“Ross still needs to improve the changeup. Based on the progress he’s made this season, it could happen. He has the tools and he has the desire.”

Five good things from the Pirates series – Jeremy Nash of The Friarhood

“After winnin’ two straight games against t’ Mets, T’ Friars dropped t’ first two, and t’ series hostin’ t’ Pirates at Petco Park. Though this be normally not a good thin’, thar be plenty o’ positives t’ take from this series. Here be me five.”
