Daily Friar 8.24.13

Last night did not start off well for the Padres. As Ron Burgundy would’ve put it, “that escalated quickly. I mean that really got out of hand, fast.” The Cubs got on the board early scoring six runs in the first and forcing Padres starter, Edinson Volquez out of the the ballgame after recording only two outs. Fortunately, that would be all the Cubbies would score as the Padres bullpen shut them down over the next 8 1/3 innings. As the bullpen did their job, two of the Padres’ hottest hitters, Jedd Gyorko and Will Venable, led the offense to a come from behind 8-6 victory. Gyorko had two home runs on the night while Venable was a double shy of the cycle. I don’t know about you all, but I’m still smiling about last night’s victory. Make sure to tune into tonight’s rubber match as the Cubs send their ace, Jeff Samardzija (7-11, 4.12) to the mound to face Eric Stults (8-10, 3.70) for the Padres at 5:40 PT.
