Daily Friar 8.10.12

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Padres off days are always long. I personally don’t watch a lot of TV to begin with, but when I do it’s usually because the Padres are playing. When I have it on I will mute it and do other things like read or something along those lines. Last night I didn’t get to have that option with the off day. It feels like the Padres haven’t been playing for a few days with the afternoon get away game on Wednesday. But now the team is on the road and will be playing 13 games before their next off day. This does include coming back home for a six game homestand. First up is three games in Pittsburgh, followed by 4 games against the Braves in Atlanta. Then we head home (without a day off) to take on the Giants and the Pirates. Notice how all those teams are making a playoff run? Yeah these games could be very interesting. Here are your Padres links for today:

Hedges catching on with program real fast –
“Hedges entered Thursday’s game against West Michigan with a .261 average in 79 games. He has eight home runs, 23 doubles, 42 RBIs and 13 stolen bases, to boot. Defensively, he’s thrown out 34.1 percent of would-be basestealers in 126 attempts and leads the Midwest League in games caught (77) and putouts (628).”

Ever so gradually, Padres’ hitting on upswing – Union Tribune
“Fact is, they have gotten progressively better, if still only good enough to stay ahead of last-place Colorado in the NL West Division. As Plantier put it, not exactly using ballspeak, Padres hitters are ‘trending in a good direction.'”

Mickelson promises he won’t meddle in baseball operations – NCT
“Mickelson, who grew up a Padres fan in San Diego, said he’ll concentrate on community relations, something he saw lacking for several years.”

Padres throwing money around – CBS Sports
“But the new Padres’ ownership has had a not-so-subtle hand in some surprising decisions made by the team over the last month.”

Fox Follies – Tom Krasovic at insidethepadres
“The story, said one of those Fox employees, is that the FSSD feed doesn’t enter the Fox building. ‘We can’t watch Fox Sports San Diego; it’s not on the TVs there,’ the Fox person told me.”

More Padres pitchers making strides to get healthy – Chicken Friars
“One other important positive which many might have overlooked should be paying dividends by the end of this season to early on in 2013: San Diego
